hi all - tomorrow i plan to bathe my cob - its my first time doign it as ive not had him long and im dreading it!

he has a very thick mane and feathers to die for and im petrified i will mess it up and he will look like a giant moth ball lol
any tips that may help me????

Wear long waterproof boots, and clothes that don't go see through when wet, cos you are going to get wet, its like washing a moving car !!

First time I washed mine, she wouldn't stand still, so bribed her with small peices of chopped carrot. I used baby shampoo first time in case she didn't allow me to rinse properly. Put it in the bucket of water and mix, not directly on the horse or you will have foam suds everywhere !! Start at the front, wet with hose (if using a hose which I would say you would need especially for rinsing a hairy coblet). then "using a sponge or brush (I prefer a brush) wash with soapy water, then rinse thoroughly. Have your sweat scraper to hand, I rinse with a hose whilst scraping the water away, the bit my mare loves as she hates water dripping off her belly !

You'll most likely be surprised at how much he likes it. If you ride him first so he's nice and warm, he'll appreciate a cold shower more !!

Did mine last night, put her thermatex on to dry her (inc the leg wraps) and I expect she won't look so gleaming when I get there tonight !!

Have fun :D

Don't worry :) My boy is a uber hairy cob and washing him is easy. I just use a cheapy shampoo for a normal wash, just chuck some on, give him a good lather up and thoroughly rinse off. Same for mane, tail and feathers :) Then I tend to spray with mane and tail conditioner and give him a quick brush over. Their manes become lovely and soft when washed and their coat. Harry doesn't go fluffy at all, his feathers full up but that's lovely :)

Harry doesn't mind the hose and has quite a think mane/tail so I apply the shampoo straight to that and give a good rinse off. If not so good with the rinsing, make up a bucket of soaping water and I tend to apply with a brush and scrub it in (harry likes a good scratch anyways lol) and then rinse off.

If your cob likes it, you'll be fine. Harry is a saint, stands there for hours whilst I scrub and scrub him for shows, bless him!!

Hehe thanks, shame I can't keep him uber white all the time, would make show washing a lot easier lol!!

You'll have to post some pics of your coblet! Before and after shots me thinks :D

Lol, I do not envy you.... Tbh, his body white bits are fine, it's the bloomin' feather that takes loads of scrubbing to bring up lol! Wish I could wrap it all to stop it getting dirty lol
