Going to a show at the weekend and currently have a half(the rugged bit) white half(the rest!) black connie. Any tips on winter bathing please.
Oh why did I buy a grey horse?!

Scrub a dub dub!!
Get lots of gallop extra stength shampoo on that and repeat wash!
One of those rubber curry combs or mitts will help unlock the mud, keep going until he's relatively clean. The rest you can clean up with spot stain removers once he's dry.

If you're really stuck you could always use a little bit of persil, it works really well apparently i personally have never done it before! I would also keep his rug on him and just flap bits over to try and keep him somewhat warm and towel him off afterwards so he's not too wet and gets chilly.

Chalk is always good for legs which sometimes are extra stain absorbent, just don't put too much on incase you run around and leave a cloud behind you

Maybe put a cooler on him after with some hay or straw under it to dry him out?
In the ideal world you could hair-dry him but i don't know many who would put up with that! haha

Good luck! I know its hard work there, are a couple of greys i help groom up at my livery, but its well worth it when they float around like unicorns so stick with it, not much choice now! haha

OH OH

If you can spray a little baby oil over his coat in a fine mist to make it harder for future mud to stick before the weekend, or at least put some on the worst places it find its much easier to brush out once the baby oil has coated the hair

Hot cloth, it really helps lift the dirt out. If you search for hot clothing/hot ragging there should be a few threads about it on here with a people mentioning different tips

I tend to do the body as quickly as poss using warm water if available, then stick tonnes of rugs on while you scrub all the other bits-legs, neck etc, then plait up his tail to keep it out of the way. Then use one of those lycra hoods/suits to cover up!
We have a grey horse and use a really good purple shampoo, can't remember the name of it though sorry!

My last and current horses are grey! Nightmare

I have some purple shampoo called something like Show Shine(?) which is good but i've never found anything as good as fairy liquid!!

Hot water and fiary liquid, and then invest in a snuggy hood! It was the best thing I've ever bought and I actually bought it for his sweet itch before realising it doubles up as a turnout hood. He wears it 24/7 and it keeps him spotlessly clean. lays his mane flat and stops his rugs rubbing his shoulders

oh and learn how to knot his tail up in an argentine knot. I unknot mine twice a week, wash it and then knot it back up.

first use a dandy brush and rubber curry comb. then scrub (yes, scrub!) with a body brush. Then use a really good stain removing shampoo.. leave a lovely thick cooler/fleece on him while he munches on a haynet. while he's drying, ditto, spray a fine mist of baby oil on him. Then, the night before the show, I find hot ragging (i think it's called that!) really works on any unfortunate and last minute stains!! good luck, greys are a right nightmare in mud!! xx
