hi just learnt some new tips today and wanted to share??
to cool your blades down run them through petrol, and wipe horse down with warm water and vinegar to get the grease out after clipping??
Anyone else have any??

you're obviously a lot braver around petrol than me. the thought of having petrol in a stable, even if it's just a small pot to put the clipper head in, and there being a spark from the clippers... no, thankyou. i've seen how fast petrol explodes.

umm, tips. have the radio blaring to drown out the sound of clippers, and stand nervy clippers next door to a good horse being clipped so they can see and hear.
use the biggest span you can manage between thumbnail and littlefingernail (hand spread wide) as the measure for where to clip above the hocks.

I don't like the sound of pertol either, especially if the blades get really hot!

I always like to make sure that I have absolutely everything with me before I start, so I don't have to stop and mess about half way through.

... I think you mean diesel rather than petrol! I still wouldn't do it for fear of knackering the blades.

If you can bath the horse the day before you clip, I also show sheen beforehand too

My god guys! Don't run anything electric through petrol! Sewing machine oil is good to run your clippers through as it's very light and meant for high speed moving parts but is a lot cheaper than anything "equi".

If the blades are not properly lubricated, they will run very hot due to the friction and wear out very fast. Use either 3 in 1 or proper clipper oil.

The danger of using a solvent (diesel or petrol or otherwise) is also that it will wash the grease out of the clippers bearings in its gearbox and they will die very quickly !

Running though petrol?! Have you got a death wish?!

I remember someone saying they ran them through a small bowl of water to clean them last year!

Do all the dodgy bits first (ie. face etc.) before they get fidgety towards the end.

Give them a haynet after you've done their head / neck (or else the movement will ruin you're lines) to keep them happy.

Every now and again, give them a treat (especially for nervous clippers).

Wear a hat, mask and coveralls, hermetically sealed at neck and wrists.

Sweep up as you go, horse hair is slippery.

(I speak from painful experience)

My only bugbear is Legs........follow the line of the muscle, I wince everytime I see horses with 'waders' on.

When you think you have finished, have someone stand him up square for you, step right back and have a good hard look, from all angles, then go back and tidy him up.

Have fun!
