My horse has learnt to get his muzzle off as soon as he is turned out - he just hooks it onto a gate/fence post, then just pulls. He knows the quick release velco will come apart. I dont want to make it non-release just in case, but cannot work out a way of him keeping it on - any ideas. He is currently stabled during day with soaked hay, then turned out at night.

Changed mine to non release type as horse would get it off as soon as she went out. Have also had to have a neck strap made and attach the whole thing to that as she started pulling it off over her ears by lying down, putting head between knees and rubbing over ears with knees. I don't like the risk but it's better than her not being able to go out at all, if she has another bout of lami will be her last.

Have you tried a best friend muzzle my friend has one and it's never come off her horse - who is quite boisterous it also has never rubbed him. I have a shires muzzle he occasionally gets it off but if I put his fly mask on top of it he has never been able to get it off as it covers the Velcro strap!

I stitched the velcros together, and the one time it did get caught last year, it broke quite easily with a "panic pull" at the plastic buckles on the cheeks. (Shires muzzle). So I know my horses won't get it off unless a lot of force is applied and they always keep them on now.

Do look at the muzzle when on the horse from under his mouth and make sure the hole is in line with his mouth, it could be out of line in which case you need to make a few adjustments to the hole which wont cause him to eat more grass but if it is uncomfortable then he is going to want to remove it, also grass should be 2inches long not shorter and are there straps over the nostril cut them off.
