Tips on how to tie yourself to the saddle??

Can anybody help with this?? Would rope be ok or should i go for something elasticated?

Took my boy in the school for another walk today (inhand), the slightest little thing and hes up on his back legs and gone

Thankgod we have an indoor school with high sides!

Ive got to get on him thursday, and i really really dont want to lol. The vets has told me to give him 30 ACP tabs an hour before i get on

I thought that was loads, i dont want him to kill me but i dont want him to fall over either

He is so bloody powerful! Exactly the reason he doesnt jump because he's bum pings you that much you go flying

No honestly, I havent read your previous posts but am presuming he has been on box rest??
My horse had about 20 weeks box rest and walking him in hand was dangerous especially in the school, which I tried once as I thought it was the safest most confined space but it took 2 of us to get him out, so it was up and down the concrete yard for us with a chifney and sedalin.
I was dreading getting on him but hacked out with a sensible horse. He was fine, I was amazed.

Its vets orders on him coming back into work, so yes, ive got to lol

Louby, yes 3 months box rest, to be honest he loves having things done with him, and he loves being worked so im *hoping* he will be so thrilled about doing something for once, he wont mess behave.

Also walking inhand, round and round an indoor school must be very boring so im hoping when im on him, it will give him something else to think off. Plus, ofcourse, my mum will be on guard with treats, and he will do absolutley anything for a pony nut bless him.
 
are you serious there is no way on earth i would tie myself to a saddle if the horse comes over how do you get away there is also no way i would ride a horse who has had 30 ACP tablets sedated horses are very unpredictable why do you need to ride him sedated

He has been on box rest for along time and i need to start riding him as part of his recovery, if i dont sedate him, he would probably kill me and put himself back at square one, which means box rest all over again.
 
can you not lunge him or is that due to injury? i personally would lunge him first, alot! or even long reining, you could try the oxyshot syringes rather than drugs - not sure would want to ride sedated horse myself

I would be really worried about riding a drugged horse, I have heard some horses would fight the sedation (panic) you should maybe try it first to see what his reaction will be.

Lunge or Free school first, maybe lead him from another horse out on a hack, trot him out for a few miles up some hills to wear him out

You could put a neck strap on him just to give you something to hang on to if he does do a rodeo with you? And a body protector for yourself of course!
I went to tae kwon do a few years ago and they actually teach you how to fall to minimise injury... you could maybe invest in a few lessons? lol!

I think 30 ACP is bloody excessive. Has he had ACP tablets before? How many before they took effect? I would certainly want to be very clear of what his ACP reaction amount is before using them to ride.

To those who say it is dangerous to ride a sedated horse, I totally agree, but sometimes needs must, and at least she isn't using them for hunting (people do do that!).
 
Its not un common for horses to be ridden on ACPs, in extreme cases its for the horse and riders own safety and used as a way of getting a horse (youngsters) used to dealing with being out of their comfort zone (when all else has failed) just takes the edge off, then they can come off them and be sweet as a nut and have learnt in the process.
 
I had to sedate my 15.3 medium weight cob when i was bringing him back into work after 6 months box rest. He was not allowed any turnout, just controlled exercise. I built his inhand work up from 10 mins to 1 hour twice a day it nearly finished me off! I was advised to give him 7-8 acp to start ridden work, wore my back protector and had a person with me on foot. I have to say it worked very well, it took the edge off him so he didnt do anything silly and I built his ridden work up to and hour and gradully reduced the acp accordingly.
 
30 ACP does sound like a lot. Could you do a test before you ride and sedate him when he's just in his stable, chek he won't be rendered unconscious nearly?

My advice is boot him up, get your thickest most protective body armour on as well as thick long sleeves and gloves of course. There is a gadget around that is like a grab handle, joystick shaped which attaches to both stirrup bars but I can't find it - you could use something like this though:

You could make a similar one our of a pelham rounding, but wouldnt be able to hold on to it constantly like this one.
 
Definitely get a neck strap!! I'm currently bringing my rising 7 16.2 WB mare back into work after about 12 weeks box rest. She is terrible in hand and on the lunge when in the school when given no sedation. Just goes up and up and up and plunges around. We started off with 3mls sedalin and now we are down to 1 and half. She is better being ridden, as you have more control than just a bridle and lunge rein. I do not like sedating her, but it is safer for her and me if she is.... it won't be forever.
The neck strap is helping me so much as she still jumps out of her skin for nothing, has the odd buck, and plenty of spooks. She is sharp in her 'in work' mode, so it naturally follows that she'd be worse without proper work.
Good luck, sit deep and keep your lower back relaxed!! Try not to tense up if horse starts to muck about and give with the reins as soon as he relaxes!
Phew, its pretty obvious this is all I've been doing for the past 2 and a half weeks!

Thankyou all for your replies, i had the physio out today (dont think i should keep making him feel so good beofre i get on though lol) and we have decided a different plan, we are going to keep to the inhand stuff for a while, on a few acp, and start introducing pole work to make him strengthen up his weak spots.

Then she is booked to come up and give him a check in two weeks, and fingers crossed, and weather permitting, he will be able to be turned out. Then the ridden work can start!

At least that way, i dont get hurt, he doesnt do any more damage and i will be able to get on him with a couple of pills, instead of 30!!
