I'm looking for tips on preventing my horse rubbing his mane on the stable doorway when he has to come in night time during the winter, I'm thinking of covering the brickwork with something that wont actually cause the hair to break off?? I have considered a hood but think he may get too hot...

Find out why he is doing it in the first place. Is he rugged in the stable? Too hot? Sensitive to whats in his feed? etc etc
Unfortunately we have to bring them in at night time during the winter, he is never overly itchy in the summer months just the usual itchiness. I am very careful not to over rug in the stable, he is usually unrugged as he is a hairy cob. I can't help but think it maybe partly boredom which turns into a habit. I do try to have I'm in the stable for as shorter time as possible.

Stables are very hot after a while it is very noticable when you walk in from the outside...so if he is unclipped and heavy maned he could still be too hot even if unrugged. Manes are very good at keeping the heat in. You can't change the stable routine and im sure you dont want to cut off the mane but have you considered clipping the neck under the mane and if possible the whole neck?

My horse is cob x (ISH techincally) but he has a rubbish mane. He still however rubbed his mane out every year i have had him but last year i only lightly rugged him as he got a bit portly, he was half clipped and in a 50g in coldest winter. He didnt rub his mane out at all. this year he will be fully clipped thus rugged a little more but he may or may not get a hog.

I had one like this, he did have sweet itch in summer, but it was then a habit even in winter. Totally cured with a grid over the door. No itching. No trashed fly rugs in summer. Not the solution I would want, but it worked and stopped him rubbing his sweet itch until it bled.
