What's the best way to introduce a youngster to lungeing?
I plan to do it in a head collar and have little experience with this sort of thing.
He's quite straightforward, in that he's a native pony and easy and quiet.
But he does need to do something as he's coming up 5, and the spring grass isn't far away!
Thanks

Hi!
Do you have an instructor that can help you? Lungeing is really an art in itself and you don't want a novice person with a novice horse - really bad combination! Why would you be lungeing in a headcollar? Have you bitted him yet? Please get yourself some help so he can continue being straighforward and you can enjoy him

echo Kirstyl, what are your plans with regard to breaking him in??? Is there someone on the yard who can help or a friend or instructor who can come out there to help you? Or look into yards that offer this service? btw, lunging is better done in a proper lunge cavesson.

I bitted mine in the stable was leading around in it and put a roller etc on. Began lunging in a bridle with a lunge line, mine was incredibly straight forward to lunge.. was a natural and then began long-reining once we got the basics in lunging with voice commands.:) Personally I would't start them off in a headcollar on the lunge as they can learn bad habits as you have got less control etc if they decide to run off or mess about.
