tips please

does anyone have any tips, exersizes etc to help me improve my position, as it is fine when jumping one or two fences but when i do a course it goes out the window at about jump no. 3, and also resently i have got quite bad at seeing strides, so any help on position and seeing strides is great, i think that once i can see strides my position will get better, but help please xx
 
Dont worry about seeing strides! Make sure rhythm and impulsion is there, and the fence wil come naturally!

What happens to your position!?
 
my position is good over only a few fences e.g i get my bottom to the back of the saddle and give my hands a bit and get my whole body right, and then i will get a distance wrong and we will have a half stride into a dog leg, and then it all goes down hill as my position just doesnt happen and i start to get all distances wrong unless they are in a completely straight line
 
Hmm, thats nopt seeing strides, thats getting lines right! Also, if you have enough impulsion, and looking forward o the next fence in plenty of time, and walking distances, you should know where you need to be riding to meet tyhe distance? Also trying too hard can cause problems....
What heights are you jumping?
 
between 2'6 and 3' at the mo, but i find 2'6 too low and i don't have a problem with it as i find it low and i can do all the striding etc and none of it is a problem

I think it is down to impulsion from what you have said, but without seeing pics etc, cant say. Gridwork is good for distances, and using a fa grid is great for doglegs etc.....
 
yea i think i am going to hire medstead or somewhere and set up a course with long striding and short etc start at a small height and build it up.

Lovely horse! I think it is a case of tension tbh! Once you get the horse moving forwards confidently, and you are relaxed enough to go with it no matter what, you will be fine! You need to go with what is happening, as opposed to trying to go with what you think is happening!? Relaxing and not anticipating will help, and grid work for your confidence and help you get an eye for distances.
 
Another good exercise is to put poles on the floor at random around your school, do your flatwork as normal around and over the poles. You should be aiming to keep the canter stride the same whether you are going over the poles or not. Should help you focus on the quality of the canter rather than worrying about the fence.
