Our section A has been an a place with limited turnout for 18 months and we struggled keeping weight on and he was on topspec feed balancer, topspec conditioning cubes and aplha a lite.

Now moved to new yard in June and has full day out in field and is happy as turned out with other pony and gained weight - has been off conditioing cubes ,alpha a and is only on hay at night and feed balancer but has got huge tummy - dont want to starve him ( on short grass) or really want to restict turnout - any ideas?

Our new dartmoor lost weight through virus - all healthy now but too lean and gets fizzy on mollassed foods so any ideas what to feed and keep him safe and sane?

I have a little Sec A. I use one of the Shires grass masks (only one she cant get off

) so therefore she can now be out all day on a not too rich paddock and she seems to be thriving on it!

I do also give her hay which has been soaked for 48 hours (only because she's got Equine Matabolic Syndrome due to being grossly overweight when i first bought her - such a shame). This kind of soaking takes everything out of it therefore she has really wot she likes amount wise, so keeps her tummy full and gut moving. She also has Happy Hoof, supplements, carrots etc for breakfast and tea.

Done give her anything sugary/starchy - wouldn't dare just in case EMS flares up.

Not sure about Dartmoor as i have to try and keep weights down, not up.

Hope above helps you with a ideads for your Sec A - keep us posted. Any ideas from you also gratefully received to keep mine happy.

Section A - Denghi Lite or good doer with a little benevit for general vits and mins. Or you could use Simple Systems Lucie Stalks and some total eclipse.

Dartmoor - alfa a lite (natives are better left off things like alfa oil), speedibeet and spillars conditioning cubes. Try some equimins pro-bio to give optimum gut performance and benevit. Or from SS, green gold, grass nuts, total eclipse.

My clydie and gypsy cob both do extremely well on SS feeds. Chancer being young needs more feed, and Cairo being a clydie is a good doer.

Mine are kept on short grazing and I put out hay from September onwards so they have nibble grazing but are not starving.

Hi, do you mind me asking if your section A is actually fat or does he just have a belly as you said? If it is just a belly that is actually a very healthy state for a horse at rest or in light work, the only way you will get rid of it is work! It's perfectly normal and natural for them to have a belly when fed grass and hay! Also don't forget we are coming up to winter and it's always better to have a bit more weight on them than not enough. Or maybe worms, don't mean to accuse you of not worming your horses, but pop belly can be a sign of worms? As for the dartmoor, i rescued 2 @ 11months old and they where in a terrible state, very thin, wormy and lice riden! Took ages to get weight on them, was the year we had the heat wave so no grass, fed them hay all summer, with hi-fi quickbeet (unmolassed) and top spec leisure supplement, plus corm oil in winter. By the follwoing spring they were looking 100x better. now the one is a real good doer but the other still looses it easily so will have to start keeping an eye on him ready for winter, due some frosts this week!. Hope thats some help and good luck.

thanks for reply - sorted out my A i think his hay from farm was not very good quality which i think was bloating his stomach so switched to diferent hay and he is looking better - he is doing slightly less exercise so will just monitor him.

Our dartie is now on 3 small meals a day plus adlib hay ( doesnt help he had his 2nd vacination this week and off food again) so fingers crossed.

Neither have worm problem, thanks
