to all Ford Cargo horsebox owners

my cargo's at the garage at the moment, exhaust went last week (first problem with exhaust in over 10 years.)
the mechanics have had a nightmare trying to source the parts, they've told me that Ford are discontinuing a lot of the spare parts now. they have managed to trace the factory that made the exhausts for Ford, and are getting them from there...
just an early heads-up and a "don't be surprised if you have a nightmare getting parts in future" post, really.

I had the same problem last year with steering pipes. Considered selling, but it ALWAYS starts, and I can't really afford anything else at the moment to be honest........!

Im sick of people bashing Ford Cargos- they are great starter boxes for those of us who havent got £10,000 + to spend on a truck.
Ive only heard of problems with pre 1986 boxes, mainly due to the earlier drum brakes and some dashboard switches are getting rare.I have never had any problems getting parts for my 1990 Cargo- LCP Engineering formerly Chiltern Brake in High Wycombe Bucks is fab for mechanical parts (01494 534311) my cargo exhaust was on the shelf for around £100.There are lots of cargo breakers on Ebay for the other stuff so dont write them off yet!

Mine always starts too, we have ours serviced at Highbury Horseboxes and were told parts are usually found on ebay etc. Very little wrong at its last MOT in Jan and like Land-Girl it's all we could afford at the time.

I was going to ask the year!
The problem is whether it's metric not imperial measurements ie with break pipes, exhausts etc.
Imperial parts are no longer manufactured.

Saying that you can get parts, pipes made up for you (expensive)

The reason people knock older Cargo's is because of the above. Also bear in mind your average garage/mechanical person will not be trained with older lorries.

You are utterly correct to warn people of your problems.

A cheap lorry is not always a bargain!

Never had a problem with getting anything done on our old one (1987). Our local garage that we have used for years have always been excellent. Maybe it just in some places they cant get the parts!!

Isnt this why people stopped buying the old Bedfords?

If any one has an older cargo ... mine is a 'G' reg be warned... if the pipes to the steering pumps fail ... DO NOT let them put on a new metric one.. whatever they say the miniscule difference in pipe size IS significant... and yes parts are scarce... its easier to get bits for my former box ( a bedford TK) than this one... but I do love and providing oits not in need of TLC ( and parts..) its fantastic and goes like a dream...

No problem to get power steering pipes-both metric and imperial- Spectrum Hose in High Wycombe will make them up, while you wait (10 mins) for about £40 or new old stock is on ebay for a similar price. Yes if you want to go to a Ford garage and buy parts over the counter then you will struggle but if you are resourceful and ring/surf around then you WILL find what you need at a reasonable price. My lorry garage says they have far far more problems with the early Iveco chassis (1992 onwards) than with cargos- they never have issues with getting parts.

Your best bet is to get your horsebox's serviced by a mechanic that tends to do mainly horse boxes as they will know where to get the parts from for ancient vehicles.

I have a 27 year old Bedford TK (Petrol ideal for London as exempt from emmision zone charges!) and parts are still available if one knows where to source them from.
