I'm looking at getting a solo comb for my boy; the main reason being that, while he's not dangerously against having his mane pulled, he does show signs of discomfort and doesnt particularly like near his ears being done.

But i've never really used one before, and i'm just wondering:

Does it make the mane grow back thicker/bushier?
How often do the blades need changing?
Can you just get the blades re-sharpened like clipper blades?
Can it be used to 'pull' tails?
Does it make plaiting more difficult/plaits look messy when the cut hairs start growing back through?
Finally, if done properly, does the mane actually look nice once finished?? lol

Cheers guys :)

I only use it on the mane.

My blades have finally worn out after about 6 years, you just buy replacement blades for under £10.

I've never found it made the hair grow back bushy and affect plaiting.

I swear by my solo comb, particular for horses who dislike their manes being pulled.

I can't say I use one, mine are good to pull and I'd be useless with it. But I ride a horse with a solo-combed mane and it looks fab! Looks just as though it's pulled :) His owner is very skilled at these things xx

I use a cheap version of the solo comb - I have a couple of these: http://www.rideaway.co.uk/mane-comb...utm_medium=shopping&utm_campaign=purenet_feed

I use it as if I am pulling and just cut instead of pulling in the last step. Our girls have v thick manes so I use a tail rake as well to thin first.
I think the comb gives a good 'pulled' look as long as you don't just cut with it! I haven't changed the blades on either of ours yet and they have done about 8 months hard work each. I don't use it to pull tails, I leave them au natural and plait instead if we are competing as I don't think anything mimics a properly pulled tail - and I won't pull so I leave it be! I don't think it looks messy when the mane grows, I do tend to do a little every couple of weeks rather than a massive attempt every so often, I think that helps it keep growing neat too. I've not found that the mane grows back any different. You can't get the blades sharpened, but they aren't expensive to buy.

hth!

I use one as it's so much easier. The company has stopped making re placement blades as the newer combs don't need their blades re placed !!!!

I will try to answer your questions :)

1- can do, depends how you use it, if you can cut as close to the scalp as possible then no it shouldn't do, but if you are abit lazy/less thorough then yes it can do!

2- Mine wear out quite quickly which is highly annoying! If you try to wash the horses mane before solo-combing it will be less greasy so blades will last alot longer. Buy one of the combs with replaceable blades as this is cheaper in the long run then buying a new comb.

3- Don't know

4- Again don't know never tried!

5- I don't think so, so long as you use it properly and are good at plaiting neatly then no it shouldn't.

6- Yes :) Solo combing is a bit of an art but once you get the hang of it manes can look lovely, just like pulled ones. :)

Honestly the replacement blades are no longer made. Once stock is gone there is no more.

you're 100% correct, I told my friend who manages the local tack shop. She couldn't believe it and rang them while I was still there and they confirmed it. (they did not however say their new ones blades wouldn't blunt! That's new and I don't think I believe it!)

thanks guys, i'm convinced, i will invest! :) Does anyone know which is the most current version of the solo comb, im looking at one on ebay which is a 'mark III' but the one on Rideaway doesnt have a model number! x

The rideaway one isn't a 'solo comb' it is just a comb that does exactly the same thing! I thought the solo comb was really expensive and the replacement blades are pricey too, so I got the rideaway one instead.
