To all those people with shiney horses!

I am very jealous every horse I see seems to be so shiney! My mare has high oil chaff for her coat and soya oil everyday in her feedbut she just doesn't look as shiney as everyone elses horse.

What can I add to her feed to improve her coat appearance. She is healthy and up to date with worming etc and her coat is perfectly ok but I would love to give her that little bit extra.

i use good old fashioned cod liver oil it always works well with mine

well all i feed mine is basic mix, fibre cubes, graze-on aqnd wheat feed, basics feed, but its all in the vege/sunflower oil!

I use nothing and everyone thinks I feed him on cod liver oil or something. I lie and make up things like Windowlene though lol

can you use sunflower oil from supermarkets? Does this work better than soya oil? What quantities would you give it in?

i groom for 30 mins everyday... and he isnt fed any oils at all

he is incredibly shiney esp. in the sun, and me thinks the part of that is from grooming and down to his genes as well

some horses are just generally shinier, depends on the breeding i think as well - a bay cob just dosent shine as well as a bay tb imo, even when on same diet. i think as well it is the condition of the coat - ie still some winter coat. my boy lost his 2 months ago! although all depends on the colour of your horse - greys are virtually impossible to see the shine on

if you want shine i would suggest outshine as well, and soya oil works really well.

I feed Blue Chip Balancer right through the winter and into spring - it's perfect for my girls, they come into summer looking fantastic, shiney coats, healthy weight - it also puts them in good stead for tackling the spring grass as their guts are healthy. Also, a good groom every day or so doesn't go a miss.

correct feeding (lots of oils, vitamins and minerals), half an hours grooming per day, strapping, a wash with a gentle shampoo, a ton of elbow grease and a little bit of coat shine. create this:

Mine isn't fed a supplement/ oil, just has an owner with OCD grooming

What colour is your horse?

My mare is incredibly shiny but she has that gold/copper chestnut glow but the other liver chestnut is also shiny but not nearly so outstanding and eye catching - its just the colour.

When we have had greys - to get that real silver reflection in the sun is something to be proud of but you have really look for it!

Grooming is what does it, distributes the coat oils down the hair shafts.
I wouldn't feed oil to a heavy cob, that I struggle to keep slim. Oil, of whatever type is very high in calories.
Thats why endurance folk use it on their horses!

She is a tb cross. Perhaps its her age. She is almost 20. Wouls this make a difference. She is bay btw and although she has a sheen she just doesntt shine!

Do you think it might just be the time of year when they moult? My mare goes horrible and moth eaten with bald patches where she has lost her winter coat but not grown the new summer coat through yet.

Thats very true, she is still moulting like mad and does look quite moth eaten!

i do not like using furnature polish on horses, the build up of silicone can cause bleaching and the furnature polish itself can cause bad reactions.

I changed my ponies feeding and now he has a shiny coat!! Im so happy coz it annoyed me for ages that everyone elses ponies were sparkly! He's on D & H safe and sound, dont know why its made him shiny but id highly recommend it!

I feed all miine simple ration of mix and chaff but they all get Seaweed supplement.
It is very cheap compared to most supplements ...I have been using it for years...mine always have early summer coats.

Mine aren't too bad ATM but they are still clinging on to their winter coats, I think because where they are kept is quite high up and still breezy on the hottest of days!!

thanks, he's my superstar and at 18 is looking very well (i swear he thinks he is 2, he is getting worse behaved as he getsd older). He lost his winter coat a couple of weeks ago and is beautifully shiney now, he was beautifully shiney with his 6 inch thick winter coat as well but normaly it was covered in too much mud to realy see (he lives out, and normaly unrugged but he has been rugged for some of this year).

rubber curry comb to lift out the last of the winter coat then a good 30mins a day with a body brush. TBH some days my horse looks kind of dull with a little bit of a sheen, other days she glows bright orange and you need sunglasses to look at her! never quite worked out why!
