As I write this my 21mth old, beautiful dog Holly is in Royal London Animal Hospital after being rushed there yesterday due to my errors. I couldn't feel more guilty and want others to read this and learn.
We have a farm, Holly is allowed to roam free around it as she is so well behaved. When we laid the mice poison it was in 'dog proof' places. Unbeknown to us, another person on the farm had put down rat bait more openly. No other dog has ever touched it on the farm so they thought holly wouldn't as well. Holly has either eaten this or dead mice which have been poisoned.
My dog is basically in danger of bleeding to death inside out, her lungs were starting to fill with blood and her stomach is bleeding. She is currently recieving treatment in the form of plasma transfusion. I am currently facing at least a £4000 vet bill (some of which will be covered by insurance thankfully!).
Holly must have accessed this last week, at the weekend she had blue/ green stools, as she was showing no other signs of illness we dismissed this as eating something odd. Thursday night she started having a bit of a cough, by friday morning I had decided to take her to the vet, after this point she brought up alot of blood.
I didn't know the signs of rat poison even though it is one of the most common poison for dogs especially on yards/ farms.
My plea is please familiarise yourself with the symptoms, the sooner it is spotted the better outcome are for the dog. And don't be as dismissive as I was about having the poison on the farm or on your yard, we should have taken more care, we will from now on.
I cannot put into words how awful I feel right now for not being more careful and not spotting the signs earlier, please don't make the same mistake - it has horrific consequences for your dog! :-(

You poor thing, I really feel for you and hope your dear dog pulls through. Hopefully others will see this and make changes to ensure noone on their yard is putting bait anywhere accessible.

we very nearly lost our lurcher last year from slug pellets. He went downhill SO fast i really thought he wouldnt last the tripi to the vets. Needless to say i dont use slug pellets any more, my lupins have suffered but my dogs are healthy!

Poor Holly. I hope she recovers from this. It has certainly made me think - I'm going to have a good look around the farm and check.

Sad to hear this, i really hope Holly pulls through this, i know you feel responsible but theres no point, its not been through your actions id be more concerned at others putting poison down off theyre on back and not saying.
My thoughts are with you and i hope she recovers well

I have to agree with MrsM. You all thought you were doing the right thing. No-one wants to be over-run with rats/mice.They bring their own dangers.
I did once ask a Rentokil employee about cats eating poisoned rodents. She assured me that each animal would have only taken in such a small amount that it wouldn't affect a cat.
Best wishes for Holly's recovery.

That's terrible news, poor Holly! Fingers crossed for her.

It is easy to get caught out with rat poison and dogs and I've had the same accident. We used unpallatable rat poison, in a special case that should not be accessible to other animals, and hid it under a pallet, but Jakey still dug it out, broke open the box and ate it (why???). Luckily I heard the unusual noise, went to investigate and caught him eating it so he went straight to the vets and was fine. Hope Holly makes a similar recovery.

I hope Holly will pull through, she is in the best possible care. I know you blame yourself, but whats done is done, cant be altered through worrying and stress - change these into positive healing vibes for holly xxxxx

Best wishes for Holly, poor girl. I was listening to a radio interview the other day about using rat poison and the specialist did say that it was quite a skilled job in putting poision down in the right place so that it targeted the rats while keeping other animals at minium risk.
Remember an incident a few years back where the YO's terriers nearly died after licking out the horses empty feed bowls that had had wormers added to the feed. The minute amounts left in the bowls nearly killed them and it was down to the incredible care of the vets and nurses, who saved them.
Really hope that Holly will fully recover soon. x

your not alone, whilst working in small animal we probably saw about 5 a year of rat poisoning or slug pellets. So others are aware it can have fatal consequences in some pets within half an hour so if you are aware get them to the vet asap as original poster did.

Really hope Holly pulls through, she's in the best place.

We lost 2 labradors in February. Mother and daughter, aged 8 and 3. They'd managed to get their paws on slug pellets.

Came home to find the youngest dead in the garden (probably because of her smaller size, she suffered more quickly). The older bitch was rushed to the vet where she convulsed all night, no amount of diazepam would stop it. She was put down the following morning. I can understand how you feel. The guilt is still at times unbearable.

I hope your lovely dog makes a full recovery.

I've just posted about our labs and slug pellets. I had no idea it happened that often :(

The effect of slug pellets is rapid, starting with a tremour.I am yold it takes just a teaspoon to dose beyond help.Rat poison tends to be more insidious, and is easier to save the dog.Whilst one of mine died from slug bait ,another happily survived eating a dying poisoned rat quite well.

sending healing vibes..hope she pulls through

i had experiance simular to my whippy..we only live in a normal semi and we had a mouse coming through underneath our sink cupboard..anyhow OH put some mouse poison down, cupboard shut..didnt think that dogs would get to it
a few days later no more mouse BUT saw my whippy had found the dead manky mouse outside and eaten some of it..she was sick ,lifeless, lost weight, wouldnt eat
rush to the vet..gave her vit k which acts as a anidote

luckily she had only eat a small amount and was fine after a few days and she had thrown most of the poison up

i will never use poison again esp if you have animals..its was awful i nearly lost her

and i didnt think
