To bath or not to bath, that is the question?

Mine get bathed about 6 times a year in the summer, I never bath in the winter, just wash their legs/tails for shows.

I know some horses that are bathed virtually every day in the summer after work, to cool and remove sweat.. But how I wish we could, blinking horse has a huge paddy, pulls until baler twine breaks, arses around slipping and sliding never get any further up than withers.. So any tips gratefully received.. So if I could I'd bath frequently!!!

If my horse is sweaty after a ride I will swill them off with a hosepipe, no shampoo, wash tails once a month or when needed use shampoo on socks for shows

Hello

I have one like yours !!

winter - tail gets bathed maybe twice? and if Really muddy - feathers get hosed with antibac shampoo once or twice ?

Summer - mane and tail + legs 5/6 times - coat - shows only which at mo maybe twice?

If its hot I will sponge down but not wash with shampoo.

xx

i have one with more white and a liking for lying in his poo. i frequently turn the horse on him to get rid of stains. he get bathed quite a bit for showing and hunting

I know a similar traditional who is bathed whenever he looks grubby. That can be 2 or 3 times a week in summer....hasnt come to any harm but costs a lot in tesco economy shampoo!!

Thanks, he is still freaking at the hose so its taking a while to do everything, feathers and tail etc, by hand but we are getting there - he is fine with sponges and washing down. Our first show is next week so want the hose incorporated before then! I like the "welcome to the hairy club" is that a clique yet or not quite and if so am I invited haha!

Yeah I think we should start up a hairy clique if theres not already one...

BTW I bath my mare when she looks disguisting (which is usually 2-3times a week) and before shows etc.
But always gets hosed down after work in the summer if she gets sweaty.

I thought having Traditionals was supposed to be low maintainance!!

django get sainsburys apple shampoo!

hello

dont use the hose for now - leave it on the floor nest to him - turn it one for a bit and turn it off not to waste water (not that I care Hee hee) but leave i near him so he cant used to it and just spnge him down wi a big sponge - then introduce hose and just do his legs or one leg and make sure its not on full blast and just build it up from there. give him summat to eat while you are doing it - give them summat to do while you faffing with them.

We have a HOYS show vanner cob at our yard - gets bathed all the time and doesnt worry/affect his coat etc xx

I am another member of the hairy club - between April and September, Chancer normally gets a proper show bath twice a month when I do shows.

Rest of the time he gets hosed or sponged down if sweaty with water. If he is a bit smelly, I will add some peppermint, lavender and tea tree oil to the water plus a tiny dash of a very mild shampoo to bind the oils.

In winter he will be hot towelled after clipping but I bag up the tail and mane, oil the legs and forget about white!

Feathers - I wash with fairy liquid if really oily from pig oil or grannies soap flakes from Tescos.

With Chancer and the hose, I started with it on a trickle and just followed him with it. After a while he realised it wasn't going away and standing still meant praise and fuss. He still occasionally wriggles, and if a real pest gets cross tied. Again he has figured life is nicer if not cross tied and tends to stand still.

He hates very cold water so unless the weather is hot, I do tend to use a bucket and huge sponge with warm water - I would hate to be cold hosed in cool weather so don't do it to my horses - yes they are spoilt.

If you have a heavy horse or gypsy cob au natural then you get automatic entry to the Hairy Club.

Can I join the hairy club?! (it's the pony that's hairy...not me!)

Pony gets hosed off whenever he is sweaty, which is after every ride and on hot days after being out in the field. No shampoo, just water! I wash his mane and feathers occasionally with tea tree shampoo, but try not to do it too often so as not to upset the natural balance of his skin (I am SO soft!)

in summer my mare was washed off daily after exercise with either a light mild shampoo (baby shampoo is fab!) or one of barrier hygenes lovely 'washes' (lavander or peppermint)

in winter she was washed the day before a show or if she got to grubby - i HATE dirty horses!

LOL I am inviting myself into your clique

Bert is never bathed in winter although his feet are hosed once every 2 weeks. In summer it is a diferent story, both Bert and I like a good old horsey bath and depending on the weather oce every fortnight or whenever he sweats up with work. I use Tesco value shampoo at the moment although I am not as impressed with it as the Naff show and shine I used to use so will be going back to that when I have used the cheap stuff. I put the pig oil on so it doesn't dry out his mane and tail.

LOL Go to User options up at the top of the page next to logout.

Go to personal information and the edit bit. About half way down is a text box called signature which will have some text in (your picture) put the cob clique text before the first word which should be image, hit return and then at the bottom of the page hit submit.
