To boot or not to boot?

Right, so I'm doing my first ever hunter trial next sunday, and Toto will be wearing woof wear tendon boots in front and woof wear brushing boots behind. So, the question is, should he wear over-reach boots or not? We're not sure, someone said that horses can trip themselves up on them but I don't want Toto to hurt himself. Also, there's water so not sure if they'll come undone in the water

One more question, should I plait him or not? I'm only doing the clear round class, but do I have to plait? Help much appreciated

i use over reach boots xc but there really small and are more for protecting his corenets so i dont worry about him tripping up. as for plaiting i always take their plaits out for xc when im eventing, just incase anything goes rong and u need to grab a handful of mane!

Ditto, always wear over-reach boots. And never plait xc... I'm not totally phobic about it as the ONE time I was plaited for xc on my old horse was literally the only time I ever fell off xc (head first into a tree). So would actually unplait and then redo them in the events were in the wrong order (as they were at this event, stupid PC team comps).
 
i never plait for xc (like to have something to hold on to) and always overreach boots ( i use the short ones just covering the bulb of heal, got fed up of loosing boots as horsey standing on em)
 
only takes a sec to put the boots on so is a good idea. make sure they're the right size, too big and they may catch them and too small and there's no protection, they should just cover the heels but not reach the ground. plaiting not necessary for xc only ever bother for dressage and only for sj if after a dressage class.

Basically does he overreach/do u normally wear them?? If yes then deffo wear them but if no, then you'll prob be fine!!! I've gone intermediate with no overreachs on and one of my old ponies never wore boots at all!!!

Best to use the rubber ones that the material ones that way if he does tred on them then they will just tear.

I would only put overreach boots on if he overreaches.

As for leg boots i would get some brushing boots for the front too as it will give him a bit of a chance should he knock himself (rather scratch or cut the boot than a leg).

I have never plaited for hunter trials
 
Don't bother plaiting. Do however wear over reaches. Your horse is most liekly to ever reach on xc so good idea to wear them - I never go without them and horse hardly ever overreaches anyway.
 
If you don't normally wear overreach boots now is not the time to start...he'll prob stand on them/trip. Don't plait...note that most eventers pull their plaits out after dressage/showjumping before heading out xc...

Just what I was going to say. I'd be very wary of using open fronted boots for xc. Otherwise my motto is 'prevention is better than cure' aka - boot up!!
