Im in the position now to buy a horse-ive been loaning a pony for a couple of months who is now for sale but i dont know weather to buy-the loan was never ment to turn into me buying him. On one hand I would love to buy him-we've got a great bond and trust each other. On the other hand he's overpriced, needs bringing on alot-he's 5 now but his flat work is very bad having not done much with owner, though have been working on it and is improving slowly.I also worry that in a couple of years I may want a horse to do more on as he's only 14.1hh. any advice

Because the owners know you and know he will go to a good home they may come down a bit on the price? If you're outgrowing him in size or ability then maybe you should look elsewhere as you would sell him a few years down the line anyway.

Touch decisions! Set a budget and have a look around before you make your mind up :)

How, old tall are you, if your going to buy you may be better off getting a noce 15.2 whos going to last you longer and that isnt overpriced and better schooled you can get alot for your money at the moment.:)

im in my 20's so not growing-i just think i may get to the point in a couple of years that I may want to jump bigger,do more-hes got a great little jump on him but hasnt got the scope to do big courses-which I am fine with now but as my ability develops I may want a horse rather than a pony. I think I dont like the thought of buying him knowing in a couple of years I would sell him...but in the years that I do have him I know we'd have loads of fun-decisions decisions!

If you only ever set out to loan him and never dreamt of being able to own him one day then I'd say don't buy. There are plenty of horses out there for sale, have a look around before making a final decision though. Could be you keep coming back to him and thinking you couldn't live without him.

Bond is great and you know the horse well prices can be haggled and winters coming.Sometimes the horse we didnt intend to buy ,or the horse different to what we wanted is the ideal horse after all .You dont note any issues bar jumping, hes five maybe you could have lessons, etc ?
Let me tell you my story, of my current neddy, i knew him and was offered him he was being broken i didnt want him- too small too young bolshy .
I had wanted a 16hh 16.2 hh horse schoolmaster type the gelding i got fitted my picture what i wanted , to cut story short <and i had looked at lots> he sadly was not suitable for me and knocked my confidence .He went to a suitable home at a financial loss but a good home -and i ended up buying neddy, a newly three yearold , i had watched him and helped care for him over a few weeks and really we just clicked he was 14.3hh green and me not experianced with young horses and middle aged to boot ,he has been my horse of a life time he has grown to 15.1 hh over last year he has been poorly lately with bad back causing lamness think he just went over in field and he had a virus all sorted now .
maybe have a look at whats on the market first, try a few out i think this would help you make up your mind.I know many middle aged adults who have 13.hhs and 14hh sand jump and are really happy .
Im so happy i bought ned,im sure others will say the same, current horse ws different to what they originally wanted but happy .Good luck with your desicion its hard were horses are concerned .

thanks everyone-still debating over it but your story thinlizzy has really made me think,i know i'd be gutted if he went and its true he's still learning as he didnt have the greatest start schooling wise-will keep you all posted at the moment i am leaning towards the idea of him being mine but want to be 100% :D
