To buy or not to buy?

Update on our first day.

Went back in the afternoon and Bud was in a stable to make room for YO and another Sharer to go for a hack with YO horses. He was very keen to get to them. Has been kept alone the last 2 months.

We used the time afterwards to measure him up and see which size rugs would fit him best. Tried to solve saddle problem too. The saddle he came with does not fit at all but we had another Wintec lying around and I have changed the gullet now from wide to medium and that looks much better then his saddle. I won't invest in a fitted saddle until trial is over.

I had to wait for YO to come back as the field we wanted to put Bud on is also the main way to get to the other fields. Once they were back in their field with access to the gate we let Bud go. Oh boy did he have a go over the field :D:eek:

The Gang greeted him at the fence but he was too busy running up and down.

Now the bad news: Went up today to get him in and groom and pamper him a bit .... Oh well I should have read the bit: Can sometimes be naughty to catch :eek:

Well I am home now, had some lunch and then straight back. I might struggle with the 4 weeks Trial if I never catch him :p Might have a farrier coming out tomorrow. Has anybody got a lasso spare :D

i really do like him, how long did it take you to catch him eventually lol? only tip i have for ones bad to catch is smaller paddock and once they start moving away from you , keep them on the move until they give in;) one of mine tried it a few times when i first started him working, he soon got fed up of walking and trotting round the field and came over and almost stuck his nose in the head collar lol, he still thinks about doing it now but as soon as i swing the lead rope at him he rolls his eyes and gives in:D
 
Regarding the catching why don't you 'join up' with him as soon as you can so he know you are his friend. Mind you I think if I put my horse out with all that lovely grass you have he would probably run away from me as well.LOL.

He looks a really nice horse, hope he rides nicely as well. My first horse had hunted before I bought him and whenever I took him out in company and went for a canter on the fields he would tank off with me, but that was probably more my inexperience of riding. You will probably find him a lot more forward going than the slow cob you have been riding. Good luck.
 
Yes that's what we did a little kinda "join up" but without too much running. I can see it's just a big trust issue because when I went back last night I could go up to him straight away and touch his shoulder. We'll get their ;) and I am falling more and more in love with him ;))))

Let's hope riding will be fab.

Regarding the grass on the field, yes it's lush isn't it? But it's the only field at the moment he can be be alone but still close to the others.
 
He is lovely, really hope this all works out for you both as he could do with the lovely home you will clearly be offering. Good luck with farrier and the riding, he has a kind eye so looks like you might have found yourself a bargain. Fingers tightly crossed for a happy ending x
 
and UPDATE and some help please!

I finally got a farrier out on Tuesday after the farrier on Saturday just didn't turn up :eek:!! He didn't even phone to cancel :confused:

Anyway, all good now. Bud behaved very well for the farrier and yesterday evening we tacked him up and we went for a little hack with the other 2 horses onto the common. :eek: Bud must be a TB cross French Trotter :D The speed he trots is unbelievable, lol. I really have to get used to such a bouncy trot, not like the "rocking chair trot" our cob does. ;)

NOW my dilemma. All went well I would say BUT I am so unhappy that the saddle does not fit AT ALL! It is far too narrow, so it sits too high. I am worried of how much damage I can do to him with it. I have Bud on trial for 4 weeks and I can't invest in a new fitted saddle if the risk is I won't keep him. (I am getting him vetted next). The owner has ridden him in this saddle the last 2 months since she has got the horse because she couldn't afford to get a fitted one.

What would you do now?

Go get the saddler out, get one fitted and then if all goes wrong sell the saddle on? Or would you keep riding with the saddle?
We had a spare Wintec saddle in the tack room and I changed the gullet from white to black but now it looks the same like that small saddle of hers.

Get used to farriers not turning up or if you are lucky enough that they do turn up they are usually hours late. :rolleyes:

Regarding the saddle the only thing I can think of is getting a really cheap synthetic one from e-bay and re-sell it if you don't keep the horse. My friend might have one you can buy off her for a few quid. She has left the country and left the saddle behind. I will get the measurements if you like.
 
Does any one have a saddle on the yard a friend perhaps have a saddle that might fit him? I would be tempted to get the saddle fitter out - he may be able to adjust the saddle you have to make it more comfortable and a better fit for the next 4 weeks or have a different gullet for the wintec.

He looks a lovely boy. Good luck with him.
 
Regarding the saddle could you not just get another gullet off e-bay or borrow one from some1. I have a bates one and my horse is in a black gullet and TBH is much finer than your boy. My old horse a more chucky WBxtrotter was in blue one and at a guess I would say that colour is more likely to fit better than the black one.
