To cheer us up - some of the nice things said about our horses

I took my girl for a lesson with a new instructor yesterday.

The owner of the establishment was teaching someone else, but as I rode passed she called to me "what a lovely horse":)

When I was untacking and chatting to my instructor, the owner came past and stopped to say hello and admire Smudge. She said "you're lucky that is a mare as I don't normally do mares" to which my instructor replied "well I like her too and I do like Mares" (sub text: I saw her first)

I thought that was nice, especially as Smudge had spent most of the lesson looking around at everything and whinnying at other horses, although she did jump very nicely.

I was out hacking once and got told "nice tail" the pony in question is a fell so does have a rather nice tail, just seemed a bit odd coming from a middle aged cyclist!

Gutted! That is hilarious. The art of polite conversation is lost these days!

I know and do you know what she said when we got back....

'I have poly pad travel boots'
I said...
'Oh that's nice'
She said
'Would you like to put his boots on?' - like it was a really nice thing for her to do allowing me to touch her pony ;)
I said
'Gee thanks' and walked off to sort my own pony out needless to say I didn't ride with her again :D

Regularly get stopped by people when im in my rather flamboyant bright chestnut Arab. She's got 4 perfectly straight and aligned white socks and SHE thinks she's gorgeous!!
My proudest comments though are the ones about my boy. After moving yards recently, people at the new yard can't get over how well behaved he is and say how lucky I am that he enjoys hacking by himself. The farrier thought these comments were hilarious as he has been dragged around by this cob at the previous yard and seen me return at gallop when I'd tried to hack him by himself and he'd spun around and napped back home. I don't tell them, as I sometimes want to that I'm not lucky, it's taken some bloody hard work, determination and tears sometimes to get him out by himself. Instead, I smile sweetly and agree with them!!

But they were polypad? You should have jumped at the chance you ungrateful Cur! :P

I was told just this morning that L is looking very shiny :)

We get quite a lot of isn't she pretty comments too.

The ones I like to hear are the ones about her behaviour and training though. I was very chuffed when some of my fellow liveries complained about us not going hacking one day as they had no one to help them past something spooky. :) And Ivwas positively beaming when on our first hound exercise the field master complimented her behaviour and couldn't believe she was only 5 and had never hunted before.

I bought an unhandled 5yo welsh mare straight off the hill & in foal. She was lets say 'trying' in her behaviour. When it came to breaking her in at 6yo once foal was weaned she really pushed us to the limit & YO advised me to send her for meat before someone got hurt.
We persevered and it all clicked into place and we ended up with a super super pony who won a lot in the ring, even got a WPCS performance medal. She loved jumping and could jump a 2'9 course no probs even though she was just 13hh. YO apologised and said she was amazed we had managed and what a lovely pony she was. I have high regard for YO and it made my day :)

I am frequently told how beautiful gem is - she does draw a lot of attention to herself for being so unusual.. Quite often get stopped at shows and questioned about her:).. Pity she's such a nut case! ;)

Hugo's not really there yet, a few have told me he'll be very smart one day but he's not seen many people yet.. Still looks like a moth eaten giraffe if I'm honest. ;)

Lovely thread - so good to hear the good comments.

My lad always gets compliments and is often told how beautiful he is (he knows it too :)).

He's a flaxon Chestnut Welsh Cx and we've had families stop us ask to pet him and have photos taken with him which makes my day - esp. Since he was a little scruffy and out of condition when I brought him 16 months ago.

I often get asked his age and everyone is surprised that he's nearly ten years older than they think xxx

Two lovely things
My now rider says that they are a pleasure to handle as thye have such wonderful manners you could walk them along a busy road on a ribbon

A chap some years ago said my highland pony was gold dust and could he buy her for £26000 after she did a good job at PUK finals in the workers then took the riders 4 year old sister trotting around the field without a lead when she rode her back to the lorry

Some of the stuff said on here about Squirrel has brought tears to my eyes.
Never heard anyone say a bad word about him but the two things that sticks out the most was
when i had an xc lesson with a relatively new instructor who is known for not mincing his words and when you get a compliment you damn deserve it..

He watched us jump 2 fences then announced to me and the rest of the group that Squirrel is super and would pop round intermediate all day long. Still makes me grin now!

The other was a few weeks ago when i went to David Brookes centre for an unaff sj champ.

The first day we did teams and a chase me Charlie. After the prize giving for the teams, David broome's son (can't remember his name for the life of me) came up to me and asked if my horse was Forever Young. I said yes, then he replied he was the horse that really stood out to him in the chase me Charlie and that he's 'lush'.

Which had me going round like :D :D :D all day given there were 17 in it and being a plain bay its not like he's an unusual type or anything.

I was hacking past two women walking their dogs, one I knew of, who was horsey, the other woman said to her as I walked past, "that's a smart horse" I don't think she intended for me to hear, but I did and smiled all the way back! :D

Recently when discussing putting mares in foal i said i would have loved to have a "baby"baby and a person i have a lot of respect for said baby was a beautiful example os a D . i have been told how beautiful she is msny times but that made me feel ten feet tall. :)

I don't own my own horse, but I loan a horse from a girl in my village when I am home from uni. It is a great arrangement because I get a horse for when I'm home and she gets lie ins whenever she wants because I do both of hers for her!

We regularly ride out together during the day. As we have to ride past a primary school, it isn't uncommon for us to go past when there are children in the playground.
You can hear the little girls shout "horses! horses!" before a small stampede of children arrives at the fence to watch us.

They are both gypsy cobs, one piebald (that I ride) and the other black (the piebald's daughter). It makes the owner glow with pride to hear the children discussing their favourites!

But the thing that made my day was when we were riding home after a long ride and a little girl was walking with her mum down the road. She saw us and said something along the lines of "look at those two ponies mummy! We saw them earlier and I really really want the pink one!! She's really pretty and cute"

(The pony I ride has enough pink high viz to be seen from space. Both I and her owner have been laughed at for wearing such a "ridiculous amount" in the past so hearing this was a double compliment!)

When I used to ride my mare, I would always have people coming up to me and saying "What a lovely mare, is she an Arab?" or "What a beautiful Arab". My sister noticed it when she started riding her for me, she said "I always get compliments when I'm riding Lou". Many years ago I was riding her out with my YO and her daughter (my best friend), when we bumped into a lady the YO knew hacking out with her own daughter. As we stop to chat, the lady points to Lou and asks the YO "Is this your new Arab? She's a beauty". The YO went all po-faced, pointed to the Arab that her daughter was riding and went "no, that one's mine". Cue awkward silence :p. We then carried on with our ride, which was a circular loop, and bumped into the same people later on. As we went past them, the daughter said to me "your horse is SO gorgeous". I'll admit that I felt quite smug, but I was only 12 at the time and was used to the YO knocking us down a bit (a month or two after Lou arrived, she told me that she was probably pregnant, as she was so fat , which was entirely untrue and extremely unfair!)

I was taking her for a walk a few months ago when a lady rode past, and asked me if she was a youngster and was that why I wasn't riding her. I was quite chuffed with that, given that I'm not riding her due to age-related joint problems and she also has cushings!

My new instructor put a bounce up last lesson and told me if I didn't get my shoulders back between fences b1 would stop. I laughed and said she wouldn't. She popped through them every time despite my bad riding! Instructor said she really is a genuine little horse. Nice that other people see what a legend she is. :-)
Also been told b2 my bargain basement ex racer was best £x I ever spent. That was a proud moment!

MY 15.2 TB Mare was quite ill over christmas and someone said to my mum "Oh, that horse looks old" When I was riding her out one day. She had lost all condition, was as furry as a TB can get with those odd really long hairs dotted all over the place and a very dull coat. She's 16. So when her new sharer took her to a competition the other week and someone asked how old she was and replied with "Really?! Wow! She looks so young!" (and she's a mental case SJ!) it made me so happy because she's come so far. In February she looked like an RSPCA case and now she's finally getting her muscle back and you can only just see her ribs, whats more, we were close to having her PTS in January! So happy that we persevered :D She really is my horse of a lifetime, just a shame I've outgrown her :(.

No one's seen the new one yet and he'll probably be a complete nutcase when someone does, he's only a baby and an ex racer, so his versoing of competitions aren't quite so quiet!

I've also had someone step out of their car and say "Isn't is lovely to here a horse walking through the village on a summer morning", also I love that just riding through the villages can bring a smile to peoples faces. It's as if horses are mystical creatures that everyone love, even if they are scared of them :)

This is what gets me through all the awful, wet, dreary, muddy, dark days :)

my saddle fitter came out to see the coblet who was rugged with hairy legs and head poking out. ... I pulled rug off to reveal fully clipped out muscle bound little pocket rocket. got a 'wow' from the saddler! felt very smug Barry! :-)

When the vet told me his practice called my place "the happy horses yard" I got that glowing feeling:)

A couple of years ago, I was with my lil mare Chloe at a comp venue, one of our usual haunts, doing some unafil prelim dressage, our second season together and second of me doing dressage, anyway we did a nice test, not good enough to be placed but I was pleased, at the end of the test , this man who'd been sat in the gallery got up and clapped! OH who'd read for me was said the man was enthusing over my mare and kept saying how lovely she was and what breeding was she? I know she's gorgeous but its nice to hear it from others! :p:):D

Aww what a lovely thread :D:D Some great replies.

My boy has a heart of gold which often gets him some lovely compliments :D that often make me well up a little bit :o because I adore him and also because he had a bit of a rough start so I love the fact that he's now so lovely to be around.

On our last hack, we rode past a group of little girls - one of my friends on a strikingly beautiful coloured horse, another on a smart, fully clipped chestnut gelding and me pottering along behind on my little ginger Welshie, who was moulting winter coat everywhere with half his mane a good foot or so long and the other half (the rug half!) sticking up in a Mohican. As we drew level one of the girls smiled shyly, pointed at my boy and whispered 'that one is my favourite'. Made me so happy - he was (is!) my favourite pony when I was a shy little girl at a riding school, and it just took me back a good few years! Her friend replied 'he has a nice face. I think he's smiling.', which sums him up quite well too. He is a happy chap!

I just love it when anyone is nice about my boy - would far rather they complimented him than me.

Theres this man wo lives in my village. always passing him whilst out on hacks as he was walking his dog...say hello etc. one day last summer he said I think your horse is beautiful by the way a real stunner.

I don't know if he is horsey or not but i was beaming all the way home... nice to know i'm not the only one who appreciates her :)

"What a magnificent beast" (about my 14 hh pony).

Sadly, he was p*ssed as a newt at the time and promptly tripped over on his dog lead :D

I let my horse speak to every open-mouthed adoring small child plus parent we meet out hacking. I think it's good for the horse, and good PR for horse riders generally to meet a horse and rider who are friendly and approachable. They all absolutely love him :)

Well, apart from this one child, who eyeballed my handsome beast, stared at me blankly after my kind offer to "pat the pony", then pointed at the lesser piebald beast behind us and insisted on patting that one instead ... :p:p:p

A lady driving past us in the village once stopped and wound down her window and said - 'I need to compliment you on your horse - he is beautiful'. What a lovely lady! :)

My first lesson with my instructor on my ex racer she commented how lovely and willing he was, and was shocked when I said he was £400 - mum was filming us and she walked over to my mum and said well, I think she's done pretty damn well with that one!
Watched it back after and it was like awhhhh :D shame he's turned into devil pony at the moment...
