To clip or not to clip...?

I'm unsure whether to clip Ali or not... I have enough time to dry him off properly after hunting and shows, but as I'm going to be doing a fair bit of dressage in the upcoming weeks would it be best to clip him so he doesn't look like a slightly sweaty betty after each test I do...?

If I were to clip him I'd give him a hunter clip btw...
 
I thought he was VERY fit at the moment, so I shouldn't think he will sweat much atall, so don't clip.

If he has lost abit of fitness and is starting to sweat up abit then maybe consider a 'smaller' clip

With regard to hunting it's not just the sweat but the wet mud too - it will be easier to wash him down and dry him if he's clipped.

My daughter's pony has a blanket clip and it's much easier to get him clean after hunting. He's fit too so doesn't sweat much generally at the moment.

In fact he was clipped yesterday - final one of the winter!
 
Flint could be extremely fit but would sweat and not cool down for a while. If its more comfortable for him, and easier for you I say go for it, as you know just rug accordingly. pete

He is very fit (too fit nearly...), but he's become a bit fluffier which means he still sweats up a bit...
 
If he is sweating up abit then a Bib or apron type clip would be good. (where does he seat, because if it is just in a specific area eg.neck, then you need a clip that takes that off but not too much else.

), and he definitely has enough rugs to layer etc.

I can't do any other clip apart from hunter clips as I'm sh*te at clipping lines...

His neck and girth area are usually the sweatiest parts.
 
I would clip - means easier to clean and also will not get sweaty and also will look smarter - especially for a dressage test....

if you could do just a bib, would be great......only a couple more lines and does the neck and girl.....or a blanket? Doesn't mean that much more of a line......aside from on the leg I guess....

Horseware rugs aren't roomy enough for him though as he has large shoulders and a large chest so they rub him badly

Mine is about one month off being racing fit but he still sweats when he does fast work? Don't think it is always an idication of fitness.



CM-I wuld take the lot off, much nicer for him and being shallow, it looks nicer and often smarter.

Completely agree with you... I was going to say that but was worried about being "attacked". If I clip him it's definitely all coming off.

i agree. Hattie is really fit as she is in quite a lot of work atm but she still sweats quite a bit although she is fully clipped.
 
Pony sweats like a pig regardless - I think she just is like that, as some people are! Anyway, a full clip is easier than a hunter....saying that...last woman I got to clip the pony left a huge square...isn't a hunter saddle shaped? I was with the loaner (who was paying) so didn't say anything. The loaner wanted to do the legs too, but I worry about her cold knees!
 
Take it all off, I did Mr T for the first time in his life today and even though he sweats mainly in the girth/neck and back legs area I took it all off. He'll look much better when it grows out for his summer coat and he looks fab now, not so much over grown pony. Photos to follow tomorrow when I've loaded them!

I wasn't sure if to take all of Chum's off for our occasional hunting days (though he does get quite sweaty on normal hacks), so glad I did, so much better for both of us.

And his fluffy leg warmers look cute

If you want to clip, then of course, go for it. However dont clip purely for the dressage. Mine had a winter competing at PSG and doing demos with a full winter coat and actually a number of people commented on how lovely he looked with it.

But mines winter coat isnt much different to his summer so its different for all i spose
