It does depend on the cob, all the cobs ive had are certainly cheeky compared to other breeds ive had, ive love a cob again, but i havn't got the heart to get rid of my very mad arab x, and cant afford a second horse.
So id go Cob!

Yeah lots of people say cobs are quiet and a good first horse but it isn't necessarily true i would keep an open mind and just see what feels right for you

I would guess it;s because cobs have a safe reputation, thing is,although most are nice and steady not all of them are, just as not every TB is a nutter with crap feet

At current RS we have cobs that are so calm it's unbeliveable, some cobs that are a bit more fruit loop style and a TB that is a superstar sweetie for anyone.
At a previous RS we had 2 ex racers, one slow and steady(hance the ex part

) and one for experianced riders only, some cobs that were perfect for first timers and some that only the more experianced riders were allowed on.

Think about what you need from a horse and find something that fits the bill, looking a ISH's that fit first if thats you first choice of breed) but dont exclude any type or breed from your search.
Good luck

I have a cob, bought him a year ago as a rising 6 year old and thought I must be mad - but he has always had an old head on young shoulders, he is safe, steady and an absolute star! My friend, on the other hand, bought a beautiful light weight show cob 2 months ago and has just decided to sell him as he has got just too much "spark" to him and she is losing her confidence with him. Its such a shame as he has so much presence and is absolutely stunning but looks definitely arent everything! You can get steady cobs, but as we have found out, some of them have a lot more "go"!

It's not stupid question and I'm sure there is a cob out there to suit you. Having said that, there's no doubt there's also a sports horse out there that will suit you.

I would either go to a reputable dealer so you can see and try a few horses or find one through word of mouth.

How exciting getting your first horse

Just take your time and try not to let your heart rule your head

id say try a load of horses both cobs and ISH...you will eventually find a horse that suits you...
both ish and cobs can be lovely calm horses or complete and absolute lunatics it depends on the individual horse ...
also if your looking for a calmer ISH look for one with more irish draft(RID) in the breeding than tb they tend to be less hot headed animals due to the draft blood..
