I would leave his mane for now, it will grow back if you hate the look but take ages and looks so bad while it grows, I would however get those legs clipped so we can really see how much bone he has and the quality of his limbs, they will grow back fairly quickly without looking too bad and you can take a horse out with clipped legs and a mane, the other way round just looks wrong.
 
Thanks for all your advice be positive I will get his legs clipped and leave mane on for the time being he has 9 1/2 inch off bone he's very thick legged will take some better pics for you tomorrow as the ones I have aren't very good

I'd leave him as he is. Certainly for this year, and do dressage, local shows to gain experience. Try potential driving classes too.
Maybe in a year or two time, re-think, hog and go from there. I think it'll depend on how mature he gets whether or not it would suit. But not yet.

Above all, have fun with him!
 
I've booked him in to have his feathers off there so hard to maintain as he has so much feather will make managing so much easier will see how he goes before I decide to hog thanks for everyone's advice much appreciated :-)

Elmo is having his feathers took off tomorrow so will post some pics of his new legs lol he has a touch of mud fever to so will help me treat it without all the feather :-)

I would hog!
You cannot do the M&M classes as he is not a purebred native pony.
You cannot do traditional classes as he is not coloured.

At county level your only option is cob classes for which you will need to have him hogged, trimmed and tail pulled.

Thank you Connie girl :-) the feathers are coming off today and his tail can't bring myself to take his mane off yet will do that in a couple of weeks
 
He looks like a different horse, so much smarter and he appears more mature now you can see his frame, he still has to make up obviously as he is only 4 but you can see what a nice type he is, brave move but well worth it.

Thanks be positive I can't believe how much better he looks like you say he still has a lot more maturing to do but I think I've done the right thing don't you?? I was feared of doing it but so glad I did now

You have done the right thing, if you want to show you had to but I do know how hard it can be to actually do so, easy to tell someone it will look good but harder if the horse is your own as it takes so long to grow back, look forward to seeing him later as he muscles up and gets his summer coat, he will be really smart then.
 
Do any of you think he will make a show hunter? I've been told by a couple of people to take him in show hunter classes haven't a clue how show hunters look for the ring only used to showing my welshys so it's a whole new ball game for me with my big lad Elmo it's going to be a while before I get him out want to let him have some fun planning a trip to the beach soon with him when we get some better weather when ever that is lol w
