I have a rather chunky hairy shirex cob who I am showing locally, doing basic ridden classes and a bit of jumping.
He is currently 'au naturale' with a long mane, tail and feather. not over grown but full and beautiful. any way I was told at the weekend only mountain and moorland types should be shown in this way, so should I snip it all off completely or pull it in order to plait or leave it as is? Im a bit worried he will look silly without it but I dont want to get marked down for incorrect turnout.

Daisy was hairy for two years before I snapped and hogged it all off and I wished I'd done it years before. Personally I think a hogged and trimmed cob looks really smart.

If you are doing Equitation classes, then I should imagine that it doesn't matter if he's hairy or not. If you are doing cob classes, then he would probably do better, hogged. Plaits are not correct turnout for cobs.

My cob is hairy, but she's a coloured cob, and they go by slightly different rules where hair is concerned.

well thi si s a picture of him if it helps you decide

Nooooo! ....leave him as he is!!!

He is very similar to OH's mare...she looks a tw*t hogged and clipped.

If you want to show in cob/cob-type classes they can either be shown hairy/plaited or hogged- the choice is yours. Au natrel tend to be placed above hogged around here. You could always do a running plait if you wanted to - this would show off his neck without having to get the clippers out.....

Don't hog!!! No way!!!
*Steals clippers and all kinds of cutting equipment from lexibell*

He looks gorgeous like that, as long as you keep those feathers looking like that you will do fantastically in showing

P.S. If you ever don't want him, send him my way

You could hog if you wanted too (think it would look ok) but I think you should keep it - I love hairies. If I were you I would grow it to a full on proper long mane. But thats just me

And whatever you do, do not clip his feathers. My boys were clipped last year and they still aren't right - he looks a little like the rats have been chewing on him!

He is a bit beautiful isnt he ?! lol

Im soo glad - I dont want to chop his hairy bits off but everyone on my yard seems obsessed with clipping him - will tell them all to back off!

Thanks all x

i am a pro-hogger.

but from that pic (be better to see from side on if poss?) he looks better as a hairy traditional. dont know how you cope with that feather though !! if you were to hog the whole lot would have to come off feather etc and i think he looks quite sweet hairy.

NO DONT DO IT!!!! You think she looks beautiful the way she is and I would have to agree, don't give into pressure of how people think a horse of your ones type should look!
I personally love the au naturale look, as as much work as full mane, tail and feathers are (especiall in wonter) they look absolutley stunning!
I have not seen a good blend on the legs when feathers are clipped off either, just looks stubbly to me.

Oh an Ps...we have plenty of red rossettes from past horses shown the natural way (hoping our current gypsy cob will add to them when we start showing him this year)
