just to ad she is carrying too much weight for my liking at the mo and we are working on it. she is in during day and working fairly hard 5-6 days per week she has just has 3 and half weeks off though due to dental work and my holiday, she has shifted a lot in the week and a bit i have been back.

if i grow her mane it grows as a double mane, its thick and wiry and she hates having it pulled (it was pulled 3 weeks ago) and looks like this already and this is tame after a bath.

so opinions please do i hog or not?

Oh poo, I so wanted everyone to say whip it off-it is the one thing i don't like about they way she looks, but I do agree she is very native looking so may not carry it off ah well it will stay then (for now):D

i also like a hogged mane on a cob. (although horror of horror's im actually quite liking it on the tb polo ponies!) It looks workman like and smart.

Tempted to say try it on your mare and leave the forelock but i realise that's not anybody's idea of workmanlike :D

can you not sedate her, pull it and thin it?

I might buck the trend here and say try it :o wouldn't have thought it would take too long to grow back to what it is now if you didn't like it, my old boy's certainly didn't!

in the horse world many of us sedate at the drop of a hat and underestimate the complications that there can be so personally i think its not worth the risk to pull a mane, currently i twitch her but i am not really keen on that either. i think it will be long or hogged-it is only for vanity after all.

i like the idea of trying it and seeing what it looks like though.

I wouldn't hog it either but if it drives you mad why not put in lots of plaits only about 1-2" apart and only plait the top couple of inches? Would keep it tidy and help to put on the correct side. I do this with my lad whose mane splits in the middle and I also thin it from the underside with a smarttails rake first.

good idea, i have done that in the past and she tends to rub it if you plait it, may grow it long again and do one big plait when i ride

But, this pretty pony is not a cob and would not look like a cob even if she was hogged.

A thinning tool, thinning scissors and patience would have her looking wonderful.

Agree! Thinning tools are painless, and can do a good job if you take your time. I usually vote to hog, but not on this one ;)

yes they would and they have in the past but then it grows back looking like a bog brush;)

I know !, but it keeps you out of mischief trying to keep on top of it. Here is a picture of my cob, I took the plunge last week and I am not sure I like it, plus there is nothing to wrap my hands in anymore !! Shall I leave it or let it grow back ? I have never had a hogged horse before, and I think I am regretting doing it.

i love it

Soozyq and AA both your two look very smart hogged and I much prefer the hogged to the natural look on them both (wondering now if my boy could pull it off) - sorry OP, don't think it would suit yours :-)

Thank you. when I took it off and looked it all lay on the stable floor I had a cold sweat. She is a funny beast, a pretty carthorse with her mane on, but more of a heavyweight cob with the hog.

She is heading to our local agricultural show in July for her first visit to the show ring, she is not good enough for county level but hopefully she will be a bit of fun locally. Subject to her agreeing to get out of bed which cannot be guaranteed.
