My horse is 17 now and although still in work and loving it, won't compete to the level I want to do. I've had her for 4 years almost and I wish I had the finances (and the time!) to keep two :(

I've decided I would like to find one on loan or possibly buy for me to compete but this leaves me with the decision of loaning or selling my mare. I've advertised as LWVTB as I want to be sure she's with the right person and has a home for life as she really is my baby! But I have heard such horror stories about horses going on loan and coming back lame/mistreated and now I'm not sure which to do!

i'm sure it has an equal chance of going wrong with either loaning or selling. if you really couldnt bring yourself to sell her you could loan her out but ask for her to be kept on your yard, then you can make sure she is well etc. :D

You could put her out on loan to someone nearby so you could easily visit and you might find that if they get on well enough with her they might want to buy her eventually.

Nice idea - but this seriously reduces your market.

I think if I were you then I would sell her. If you loan her out then there is always a chance of her coming back at a moment's notice, and then what would you do with her if you have already filled the stable with another? At 17 she has plenty of years left in her and if you choose the buyer carefully you should be ok. Perhaps once you have found someone who wants her you could let them trial her for 2-3 weeks at your place before she goes away with them.

If you do do LWVTB and they want her vetted, then make sure this happens BEFORE she leaves your yard. Also, take a 10% deposit when she leaves and have a firm date when they have to either return her or pay for her. The deposit should only be returned if she fails the vetting.

Good luck.
