I have a new job and it is becoming apparent that the next two or three years are going to be tough with lots of courses end exams.

I am coming to the conclusion that I am going to find it really difficult to bring Blue on. He is three in May and there is just no way I am going to have time to work with him as well as ride Chad and care for Ellie.

However, I don't really want to sell him. But would anyone loan a rising three registered Fell pony? In an ideal world I would want someone to start showing him - backing can wait for another year or two if need be. I would have to have him loaned from my own place, I just couldn't let him move away and all I would be asking would be £40 a month towards field rental/farrier/worming. He lives on fresh air, never gets hard feed, lives out 24/7 year round.

Do you think he is loanable? I would rather not sell him unless I had to.

i'm afraid i can't see anyone wanting to take on a 3yro, get it out and about, break it in and pay for the pleasure.

i think you may get more interest if you were to let him move and also write something into the contract about if he is sold, they get a % of the sale price.

I'm afraid I agree with the above. I doubt you would get interest if it were free loan.
Usually it's the owner paying to have a youngster brought on & broken.

Afraid I agree with the other two - I think it would be very unlikely that someone would be prepared to pay to look after a youngster they can't even ride, or then do all the work breaking and riding away on a horse they don't own.

I think your only possibility would be to loan to someone who wanted a companion, and wouldn't mind doing some showing on the side, but obviously they would need to take him to a different yard then.

I think if it was free loan, then I do think you would find someone.

Some people do enjoy the whole bringing on youngsters thing, so if you found someone that enjoyed doing that at home but also enjoyed going off on weekends showing through summer, then I it would work out really well for everyone, horse, loanee and you.

Not everyone does things purely for money, but for enjoyment, however expecting them to pay £40.00 towards his livery when they are getting him out and about, may asking a wee bit too much if its just short term, in which case you may be better off selling and letting someone buy him to bring on and keep. :)

i've got a section D that is on out on loan, he was only just broken in when you went. so yes people will loan and put the work in. however i think people will propbably want to take him to there own place. try placing an ad on horsegossip forum i had about 30 replies to mine when he was on there. the people that have my boy actually keep him closer to where i live than i actually kept him.

Some people would be interested. Judging by his age though, the loaner may do things differently to how you like them and he'll adjust to their way of working so it may not be ideal. Also those capable of breaking in etc I would imagine would prefer to be paid rather than to pay.

Have you considered full loan with view to buy? My friend does this with ex racehorses but she will loan them out for years before considering selling.

In all honesty....I certainly wouldn't pay to loan a horse/pony that I couldnt ride!
£40 a month for what exactly? You dont want him to leave your place, so there is no livery as such, he is getting no hard feed, so that only leaves his foot trims, wormer and insurance and hay....which as he is not yet ridden is a cost most will find hard to swallow.
If someone is willing to back him and bring him on for you, I would probably just ask for them to pay the insurance for him and cover the rest yourself. They would be doing you a big favour after all.

try going on this forum 'www.fellponyfans.com'

It is a site specifically for fell pony owners. They might have some more advice specifically fell related on there.

Only way I could see a loan of a 3 year old working out would be if he was super top quality and someone wanted to show him in hand. Even then I'm not sure what they would get out of it unless they really loved showing in-hand, he's not a stallion that can be used, he's not a mare that can be bred from.

If he is top quality someone might loan him to show but then on the other hand people may argue that actually you should be paying someone to produce him if that is the case.

Afraid I cannot see anyone wanting to loan a 3 year old, educate him and then hand him back for you to build on the ground work they have put in. Also (not being rude) but I know from some of your previous posts he is not always angelic to handle, I hope this doesn't sound out of line and you may have it all sorted now but it's not that he is simple to deal with if I remember rightly.

As a Fell owner (and fan) I think he is a lovely boy and can see why you don't want to sell him. Maybe you could get a competant "helper" to help out with all of your horses who can handle your boy, help with stable chores in exchange for riding / hacking one of your other horses a couple of times a week?

I'm inclined to agree with this.
