My boy has half a field at the moment and the other half is used by a mare so there is a fence in the middle to keep them seperated. Anyway the couple who own the mare go up about 5 times a day to check on them and they have been giving them both a carrot each day which they did ask me about and I said fine.

I have now noticed that my horse is getting a bit nippy when I go near him in the field and stable. He always makes gestures as if he is gong to bite ( he has never bitten anyone ) I recently had his saddle changed and physio out so am not sure if it's that or the carrots he is getting everyday ??

Any ideas?
 
I would suggest the same. I think they come to epect the treat and get shirty when they don't. I'm pretty sure you are right in thinking it's the treats that have changed his behaviour.
 
I had this with mine. She will never grab at me as she knows it will get her nowhere (decides to lick me all over instead) but other owner in the field said she got quite prancy and scary around her and starting to nip... I asked if they were treating and told them to stop if they were worried about it as she was just pushing her weight around.

Soon as she realised they wouldn't be scared into giving her food she let them be.

I am not a fan of treating unless I know the person doing it will keep the same standards as me and not think it's okay to do it on her terms!

I agree Pan. We have a lovely grandad at our yard who is such a lovely guy but such a soft touch with the horses. Whenever my horse see's him she's scraping at the door for treats in the morning and the two horses he cares for can be very pushy with him. The other day one of his horses reared up ad landed on his arm which is now totally purple! He was up the ard on his own so nobody to help him and I'm sure he must be nearing 80! I hope I've got that right. if you ever read this grandad ad I've over done your age then Sorry!!!
