I have the oppertunity to move my two ponies to a new yard, which will be rented by my friend, who is currently at the same yard as I am. I've had over a week to think about it, but only saw the yard today.. and I'm having real trouble deciding on what will be best for both the beasties and me. I want to start competing this year, nothing big, only local sj, and the new yard has a small outdoor school, which is where the temptation really lies for me. It is also about 3 miles closer. However the livery will be slightly more expensive, and Im also concerned about where we will stand if my friend runs out of money.. the monthly rent is quite pricey, and as a student her income is limited.. and I really dont know how she is going to afford it, but she is sure that she can
My ponies are REALLY happy where they are, the grazing is superb and abundant, they live in mixed herds with natural shelter from huge hedges, plus we are right next door to the ashdown forest. Our vet hospital is literally a stones throw away, so no callout fees, the livery is cheap as chips.. but we only have a schooling paddock in the summer, with homemade jumps, and in the winter a school down the road that I pay about £2 a time to rent. Argh so difficult.. well done for getting to the end! I having been mulling this over and over, and am still no closer to a decision. Any thoughts at all?

My immediate thought would be one of future security if your friend is unable to meet the rent costs. I think it is important to have security with horses as it is not always easy to find other yards if something goes wrong. Do you know how much the rent is in comparison to what you will be paying her? Not sure how a student can afford the rent on a yard and will she have any sort of insurance too? Those would be my thoughts...

I would stay where you are. Sorry, but it does sound like your friend doesn't have enough financial security to keep up with the rent.

How do you think your friend would feel if she knew you had said something like this? do you honestly believe any caring horse owner would ever risk the happiness of their horses without working everything out first? Maybe you should answer your question by asking whether or not you should be allowed to join your friend, as your loyalty within your friendship seems to be very low at what must be a very exciting time for her.

Thanks for the majority of replies, you have backed up what I was thinking, really appreciate your input.
For the not so useful, my friend is aware of every issue I have written about, so thanks, but I wont be losing sleep over whether I am a good friend or not

If you're next to the Ashdown Forest, I'd stay there. It's my dream to be on a yard next to the Forest!!!

And £2 hire of a school is cheap as chips. if I were you I'd stay put
