To my horror this morning I have discovered both my minis have got lice :( they don't seem to be absolutely crawling with them so I'm hoping I've caught it early.

Can anybody advise the best way to treat? They are both 10 months old and without exaggerating their coats are about 3" thick! They are kept at home so I don't have the facilities to wash and dry them so I guess that leaves me with a powder? Or is there an equivalent to cat/dog spot on for equines?

I'm not sure where they have picked them up from, they share the field with my llama so if she is also infested could they have got them from her? They don't have any close contact with each other, so I'm unsure how they would transfer from llama to pony. The only other animal they come in to contact with is our 3 chooks who are free range in their field, but again they don't touch one another.
I will need to investigate the llama to see if she is also infested but unfortunately she 'do' human contact unless offered a very large bucket of carrots, and even then she's touchy!

Any ideas/advice most welcome :)

Ahh don't know why the title has gone like that, can I change it? Must have pasted in to the wrong box on my phone!!

Sometimes they just seem to catch them regardless. My youngster got them twice, think it's partly because their immune systems are still under developed at that age. I tried the wormer with ivermectin, as it kills the lice through the blood. Also in conjunction with an external treatment like lice powder will dry out the eggs and finish the job. You will need to re-apply a week later (try coopers extra)..

Deosect I buy it off the counter at our local feed store, it's fantastic, you just dilute it and cover there coat no need to wash off, used it on all mine including rescues who were crawling!!

I think vets can inject (dectomax - or equivalent) that will clear it up without any faf.
We haven't had it with horses but did with the pigs, tried all sorts of powders etc. nothing worked except the injection from the vet.

Great thanks for all the suggestions, the coopers stuff looks good and I have seen it mentioned in other threads before. Going to go to the vets this afternoon and see what they have

Deosect or Coopers Fly+ (my preference is the Coopers) - both work well with mini-yak coats too - just work in hard with sponge.
Often the young or old 'just get' lice.
Make sure any brushes & headcollars are treated too - before, during & till the ponies are clear, keeping them a set of brushes each (or should I say scrapers as brushes are no good on woolly-yak coats at present :D )

Dont panic, the blighters WILL be exterminated :D (lice, not the ponies! )

So am I right in thinking that Coopers is a liquid treatment and Deosect is a powder? Or do they both come in either?

deosect is liquid comes in a tin - you have to dilute and spray it on, it stinks - wear gloves - give them a good covering and you have to do it again a week or so later - but there are instructions on the tin

I think with powders you need to give two treatments as eggs are not killed the first time and hatch 7 - 10 days later to re-infest. I think that's why we see bad reports of powders which I much prefer.

Parasites are a fact of life and not a sign of poor management unless they are left untreated, so don't worry about it.

i have some powder from the vets when they suspected lice... i didnt open it as i didnt agree it was!

she had mites - some rare type which is rarely seen apparantly (or something like that :D )

the powder from the vets is reallystrong

or try robinsons if you want as its really cheap and worth a shot before calling the vet out?

i actually clipped mine out and then gave her a good bath and dosed with coopers. The sigh of relief with all that hair off and a good scrub was almost audible.

Fear not. The easiest and most effective way to treat lice is to use Cooper's Spot On. A 5ml dose per pony, repeated in 10 days, dribbled along the spine from wither to tail. No washing, soaking, rubbing in, job done.

You get this from your vet, it's not licenced for horses, but is commonly used by vets to treat lice in equines.

When I got my mare and her yearling filly they were both in a bad state and crawling with lice, they had dectomax from the vet and it did the job brilliantly :)

Been to vets, she recommended coopers fly repellent but none in stock so minis will have to wait until Monday, luckily they don't seem to be particularly itchy so I'm sure they won't mind.

I feel like I have lice now though after rummaging through their coats...I hope I'm imagining it!!

Lice are really bad this year, quite a few are suffering including my hairy pony, he is currently being treated with coopers and I am hoping it works:)

Im not sure if you saw my thread a few months back but I had the exact same situation with my minis a few weeks ago, can totally sympathise with you its awful especially as thier coats are so thick!

Powders are useless it just doesn't even get halfway through the coat!

I used Deosect - amazing stuff definitely recommend it! You can get it online cheaper than the vets and it comes next day. Literally killed them in front of my eyes. I repeated it 2 weeks later but tbh I think they'd all died anyway! Easy to apply just spray on just get some rubber gloves and masssge it in and it works its way in! And as a precaution ill be spraying it every now and then to prevent.

Dont worry too much it will be fine, just horrifying at first! No need to clip :) pm me if you want!
