To plait or not to plait? Odd coloured

Morning all!
Taking my yearling to a show next weekend to compete in the unaff ring. Could I get away with not plaiting? His mane at the top is very thin and wispy, and his forelock is almost non existent. Also his tail is still short at the top too, and I’m not sure if the plaits would just look messy!!
Was just wondering if it would look smarter if I just trimmed up is mane and left it down and left his tail alone. I don’t really want to pull/trim the top of his tail yet - not until it’s fully grown. Any tips? Tia! 630BBE5D-F4BC-44D8-B1AD-7BD19DF02B93.jpeg
 
The general expectation would be to plait the mane and at unaff I’m sure the judges will take into account that getting yearling manes into HOYS quality plaits is unlikely! I’d thin and shorten it a little and pop into plaits.

The tail just some light gel and a tail bandage
 
Plaiting will make the mane look much better than leaving it imo. It will give a better overall picture. I’d just aim for a tidy tail and not try and plait it.
 
I would expect a yearling to have a plaited mane but I would not expect anything other than a well brushed tail.

you can get away with not plaiting if it is a foal at foot but most of the time even they are plaited.
 
i would plait his mane and leave the tail just brushed well. it will be good for him to learn about being plaited while he is young, its all part of his education. he looks like a nice sort...

Thankyou, yes am going to try plait his mane and possibly his tail as well. It’s not quite as short as I thought it was!
