Following on from my previous post about giving my youngster some growing time I am now undecided about rugs. She will be turned out with brood mares and other 2 and 3 year old and has been rugged over the winter.
On the coldest days she is in a medium turnout and in the nights a medium - heavey stable but this is when its been well below freezing.
At the mo during the day she is in a light weight and at night either a medium / a fleece.
So my question is when I turn her out for her growing time next sunday should I continue rugging her or just go for it and leave her naked?

My NF yearling is out naked 24/7 except for when it went down too -0 and colder the other week then he had a lightweight on during the night. He has a huge thick coat and seems perfectly happy unrugged and tbh was a tiny bit sweaty the mornings after he'd had the rugs on.

My warmblood rising 2 colt is out 24/7 and is naked even when it is well below freezing and is loving it (completely different horse) but I only put a rug on him at the end of November so he grew quite a thick coat to begin with. When it gets really cold he has extra haylage and seems totally content with that. I would leave him naked and play it by ear in terms of feeding and how warm he is.

Hope this helps

My TB X Han is naked, but only because he insists on climbing out of his rug, and hes as happy as a pig in s**t. How the hell do they do it when the buckles are fully fasterned??

my rising two welsh A is in a light weight at the mo, but there is no shelter in his field. The weather is getting warmer and warmer, so I would be tempted to whip it off if I was you.

My boy is in a medium weight t/o during the day (only because it's been threatening rain for the past 2 days and his leight weight got demolished last week!)....and he's been coming in at night since Saturday (previously out 24/7) and is in a fleece when he is in.

He has no shelter in his field and isn't particularly hairy (was being brought in over night since October and has started moulding recently)

He's rising 17 and doing quite well....they have lots of hay during the day if it gets cold though!

I think you have to carry on rugging her if you've had her rugged all this winter.

Choose a nice medium weight and leave her in that.

We've just had a horse return to the yard that has been in unclipped, but rugged all this winter. Whilst we have chucked her out - it is with a rug. It's simply not fair to expect them to go without now that they're used to it.
