to rug or not to rug....

Hi all,

With the weather being so unpredictable at the moment, I'm confused! I own a cob who is currently enjoying the freedom of being turned out. However, he has just moved to a higher, more exposed yard, and so has spent the last couple of days in a summer turnout rug until he 'acclimatises' so to speak.

If I ride him and we both hit a rain shower, can I rug him back up in the summer rug and turn him out, or am I best not to? New to this game. All advice greatfully received. Thankyou!
 
You can rug him and turn him out unless he's utterly soaking, in which case, you'd be better to get him dried off before you put him back out.

BTW, I live very near the east coast and we've got permawind and my horses have rugs on for most of the year!
 
No, not clipped. Seems a fairly hardy chap. But has just come from a stable and pasture in a sheltered valley, to the edge of the yorkshire moors! Even the flies get blown away.....
 
i tend to rug my lot up at night if the temp drops by bout 5/6ish but last night was quite muggy so i left them both naked!!!!
plus they are on alot of grass at the moment so they will prob have their rugs off all the time hehe
 
I don't see any problem with popping a rug on him at night if you feel he needs it.

Nothing worse than seeing a cold, miserable horse.

I wouldn't hesitate if I thought the conditions warranted it - summer or not.
 
I'd say he'll be ok, he's a cob and at then end of the day it's always better to under rug than over rug as they can run about to warm up!! My TB's been naked for a while now day and night and he's fine. The only time I'll rug him is if I know it's going to chuck it down for a whole day/night.
