Ok so i have been thinking for a bit about selling - i have 2 horses one of which has some 'issues' so will be with me for life - my other horse is literally the best horse i am ever likely to have - but i cant have 2 - they are just too much on top of my work commitments - i have had 2 for 4 years and its just getting too much and i want to start a family fairly soon.
Problem is if i sell him i will never get a horse as good as him again - he really is one in a million -ahhh what to do? I have a sharer 2 days but its just not enough plus he is 13 this year and the longer i leave it the older he will get and the more difficult he will get to sell.
Anyway he is 13yo irish - 16'3 skewbald -he has done dressage up to elem scores up to 72%, showjumped up to discovery (often knocks the odd pole so wont ever be a pure showjumper but never stops) and is truly incredible at xc - i had never done xc before i bought him and he literally never stops - did his first be90 last week and went clear on the xc and got a 35 for dressage.
Absolutely no vices whatsoever and would be fine for a complete novice.

So thoughts please - would you sell this horse and if so how much would you ask for him? eeek i can hardly bare to press submit...

He sounds like the kind of horse everyone would like, at a really nice (rare) height and unusual colour, so I would imagine you would have no problem selling him if that's what you decide. I am **** at pricing, but assuming he has a BD/BS record to show his form I would say about 5k to 7k because of his age (over 10-12 tends to put people a little bit off).

However, is there no way you can keep both? Could you not retire your other horse to grass livery or get a sharer in to help you with both?

Well the other horse has navicular but i still do quite a bit with her - she just will never do any real comps -maybe some low level dressage but thats it - but i can still hack and school her and shes a nice horse to have around - she went on grass livery for 2 years and came back sound (with raised pads).

I was thinking that because of his age he wouldnt be worth that much and the thought of someone else taking him is horrendous but i cant carry on as i am so will have to make the decision at some point. Here is a link to a pic of him last week at xc btw.

That picture won't come up for me...

I thought about selling my mare last year, and concentrating on my husband's 6yr old, who was showing lots of potential. In the end I sent her to stud, and to be honest I'm really missing having a horse that I can do everything I want on! So I'm glad I didn't sell her...

Price wise, its a difficult one. At 10, he would be a fortune, but the price will have dropped a bit as his age rises. The best thing to do is look for similar horses, and see how much they make..xx

Hello! You found me - have been thinking about it all bloomin day - i looked at other horses on horsemart and they vary so much - anywhere from 3k to 8k - so maybe i will advertise somewhere in the middle....when i feel sure enough to sell that is - cant help feeling i will regret it when i see you going off to events.
Maybe i can be your groom if i sell him?

He soudns like a schoolmaster type that would be good for a gangly teenager moving onto horses perhaps, or just an adult who wants to enjoy stuff so if he's as good as he sounds I would have thought you'd be able to get around £6k for him, 13 isn't too old, still plenty of years left in him, but much past that it would make it harder to sell.

I found you - thought I would bump the thread up! He is a fantastic horse and he'd suit a range of people; someone wanting to start eventing, someone wanting to move up through the grades, or someone wanting an all rounder. You should defs ask 7-8 to start with if you do decide to sell.

Obviously I think he is great and I think you should keep him and event him!!!!! You did really well with him at the weekend. But I think the key thing is that you have to enjoy it and it doesn't seem as if you are at the moment. I do think you might regret selling him a bit, but you need to weigh up the regret against the fact that you're not happy now with both of them. Which is worse, feeling like you don't have time for anything else, or feeling like you are missing out? I honestly don't know the answer to that, it is really tricky. If you do want to start a family then you may not have time to go out and compete anyway? What about trying to find a second sharer again? And YES absolutely you can always come with me anywhere!!!!
