Ok, so I keep my 2 on a private yard, on the farm next to where I live, so there is no chance of me moving, but the girl I'm currently sharing with has found a yard less than a mile from her home so she is going to move her horse! Which means it will be just my 2. One that is 27 but I do still ride her a couple of times a week and one that is 2 so obviously not ridden.

So I'm worried that I will end up not riding anymore if I stay on my own as I will feel guilty about leaving the 2yr old on his own and then also worried I won't do as much with him too as I will again feel guilty about leaving my old bird on her own! and if one is stressing in the field, it will upset the one that I have in!

but then, I have shared with some really terrible people in the last couple of years, it got to the stage where I didn't want to go to the yard anymore as they were making my life so stressful! I have been so happy the last few months since they all left, so I don't know what to do for the best! I don't want to end up hating going to the yard again!

its so difficult! I am a student as well, so I cant afford to get another horse at the moment, but guess that might be an option once I finish my course soon and then maybe find a sharer for that horse?

any advice?

Hmm. I know what you mean. I have my own yard, and initially let out two stables, but hated it - much prefer the peace and quiet!

Could you not put the 2yr old in the stable with a net while you ride? It would do him good to learn to be on his own now and again. Same for her..

If not, could you get a cheap pony from a rescue, or offer retirement grazing perhaps?

I would love to take on another oldie and give it a nice retirement home, but would be the extra cost of livery, which I can't afford at the moment. Guess I will have to wait a couple of months and see how I get on and what hours I will be doing when I go back to full time work and see whether I'd have time to take on another horse!

I would love to put them both in! my mare was stabled 24-7 when I got her 11 yrs ago and now lives out 24-7 and I really struggle to get her to go into a stable now. and the 2 yr old jumped out of the field shelter when I had to bring him in a few weeks ago!

I used to be alone but I had 2 riding horses then so i used to just get friends to ride with me, I was soo much happier then!

Offer full or retirement livery meaning owner covers all the costs, is barely there and the old retired pony on livery wont ever leave yours on their own. Would this work for you? Some more income but not too much work hassle for you.

Sorry if i'm being a bit thick...

Is this your yard and you have a couple of stables going spare and you need the income a livery pays you or do you livery on someone else yard and one of the liveries is leaving?

I only ask because if it's your yard that you rent the whole of, then adding another horse as a companion wouldn't cost you allot more and if you rent a stable off someone else then surly it's not up to you who goes in the spare stables and up to the yard owner??

If someone new moves in then you might get to show them around, and have a say if you think they are suitable for that yard and you could even get on fantastically with them?

well, I just pay livery there! the yard was empty before I moved in but it belongs to my parents friends.

Its basically up to me who moves in and out etc but if someone else moves in then they will pay livery to the owners! so if I got another I would have 3 lots of livery to pay and to be fair I don't pay much but I'm only working part time while I'm at college at the moment!

Thats the thing the girl i'm sharing with now, came as a sharer on an old horse of mine then got her own and we get on amazingly, we are both pretty laid back people but the experiences I've had before she came were not good! Plus we are in the middle of two towns so its quite far for a lot of people and I have ended up being left to sort other peoples horses out a lot without a thank you, was kind of just expected. so don't really want to get back into that when I have my 2 that I want to spend time with!

YES YES, I would love to do this! I thought about that in the past but wondered what sort of insurance etc you would have to have and how I'd go about contacts and stuff! this would be pretty much perfect for me if I could do something like this! :D

I think it depends, nearly 2 years ago I responded to an ad for livery at a private yard - just the owner and me. I left the yard last summer as there wasn't enough grazing for my skinny TB but we are still very good friends and I think we will be for a long time. Just go with your instincts when meeting people who are interested.
