H is currently on super flex, some days it seems to work, others less so. Now he's 17 he's just getting a bit stiffer esp cantering and can toil in the school if deep but has windgalls so can't do too much fast work on hard ground

Have read all these rave reviews about turmeric on here but have noticed you can't use it if your horse has ulcers.

I've never had H scoped so am not sure whether to risk using it? Am also worried if there are long term side effects as not an "official" horse supplement?

Mines on it. Not sure if it helps as I changed his whole diet and management when I bought him, including taking him off his cheap joint supplement and adding linseed. He is now a different horse. It also costs me about a £1 a month to feed it so unless he deteriorates then hes on it indefinitely and I will enjoy my new improved horse who isnt itchy and whose joints feel like they have been oiled :)

Make sure you feed one with the curcumin still in it, the one from Tesco has that in

I'm giving Luna nearly a tablespoon of tumeric, ground black pepper and linseed oil. Feel a bit like Delia Smith making her feed each night! Lol

Hi, there was a thread a few days ago regarding this. Turmeric has changed my life and that of some of my animals but to get the best effect then it does need to be fed properly . It needs freshly ground black pepper and an oil rich in omega 3 not 6 . There is stacks of info and research on the turmeric user group on facebook.
Marg is not recommended to be consumed at all , you would be better off with butter .
The most favoured oils are extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil or linseed . Please visit the group on facebook as there is so much advice, it is run by an Aussie vet and various other professionals who will be pleased to help.

Pepper helps it be absorbed and the oil slows its process through the stomach so it is more effective.
It is fed to help relieve ulcers in the stomach .

I read somewhere that the oil stops it being absorbed too quickly and the pepper (active ingredient Piperine) increases the bio diversity by 200%. Turmeric needs to be about 3% curcumins.

So it should be ok to feed despite me not knowing for sure if he has ulcers?

Couple more questions sorry!

-he has cushings, does anyone else have a cushings horse that they feed it to?

-they say coconut or olive oil. Dense question can I just add olive oil that you buy in people shops?! Also how much olive oil?

-can I just buy normal black pepper for people?

-he is on super flex and windgall do I feed both still?

Hi, it is tuRmeric Ashlingm,
I would really recommend that you have a read of the site. It gives excellent guidelines and experience of people who have been using it for a long time. It gives you all the ratios and guide on how much to start with. Cushings can be helped aswell btw
The pepper is just normal black peppercorns ground fresh. Extra virgin olive oil is better .
Some people make a paste and feed that, others just chuck it all in the feed
Hope you give it a go

Think I'll give it a go.

Probably a really simple question but the extra virgin olive oil can you just buy one of the bottles that people use?!

Hi, yes any good quality extra virgin olive oil will be fine. the oil helps slow down the turmeric through the gut and the piperine in the pepper helps absorbtion .
Turmeric on its own will help but I think it is 200 times more effective when fed with the right oil and pepper.
Look forward to hearing how you get on .

How much was your start dose?

Works amazingly for my 20 yr old lad when i thought id try the new 'fad' but didnt appreciate just how much until i run out for a week and he become really slow and stiffened up! Back to normal when on the turmeric again.
Then tried it on my old girl who has a bone spavin and occasional lameness with the hard or boggy ground, na, did nothing at all!

I use 200g micronised linseed, 2 shakes (or 10 grinds) of black ground pepper, 6g turmeric and cup of water mix then add to his feed, on my lad.
Doesnt get any other supplements or pain relief.

My boy gets copra meal, which is a by product of coconut oil production and contains enough oil for me not to need to add extra. Started him on turmeric and pepper tonight. looking forward t seeing if it helps

Wow im so glad that you can give this to horses with ulcers!! i give turmeric to my horse and they love it!!!!!! really see a big difference in my old mare!! does anyone find they become much more forward and full of spirit??? maybe because they are pain free, not sure myself but it does seem to work!!! buy mine from the asian cook shop so much cheaper buying it in 1kg bags!! xxxx

A lot of people find their horses a lot more forward during the early days, it does calm down fairly quickly . I think I was a bit manic to start with but having suffered chronic pain for so long, to find myself able to move again was almost euphoric !!. For me it was also being able to lose the fug of taking so many pain killers . I dont take anything at all now so nice clear head .
Turmeric has been shown to improve so many conditions including depression that it is a mood lifter .
I buy it by the kilo aswell as we have 4 horses and 3 dogs aswell as myself on it .

He's had his first dose of it tonight after I mixed it up into a paste for him so it could be drizzled on his apple/ carrots that go in his food to make sure he ate it. Felt like I was cooking for a person what with the whole olive oil and grinding the pepper into it!

It then wouldn't all come out the mixing pot so had to use my fingers then spent ages washing the flipping stuff off :p

He's only having a teaspoon to start with for a few days as just want to check he's ok with it.

mine just gets a big dollop in his feed, and a few twists of pepper. He gets linseed so we dont use oil. My boy will eat anything though! He currently gets mag chloride that most people mix with water and faff about with. He eats it chucked in with his fast fibre. Proof that cobs will generally eat anything
