Had a breakthrough ride today but until now , although I've KNOWN about Molly's bad past , it became more apparent this week and realised how badly she has been hit, so wrote the person who did this an imaginary letter ...

To the person who used to beat my horse...
You may not remember, you have probably been through hundreds of horses , but you used to own a smallish , piebald mare ,with a lovely thin stripe down her nose. Remember ? Well, they’re less than horses to you I suppose….Anyway, you felt a clear need that this horse needed hitting. Don’t tell me she was aggressive or rude or anything like that – she was /has always been the sweetest thing.Anyway, you beat or hit or whipped this horse til she succumbed or whatever and probably forced her into a harness. You then sold her on as a confident sweet 5 year old driving pony. She was in reality a 3 and a half year old , who naturally went mental went asked to pull. Does doing that make you feel like a big person ? Shes the most willing animal ever- if you hadn’t done that and asked nicely ,I bet she would have done up the buckles herself.
Anyway so the YM discovered she was a 3.5 year old and she was terrified of people. Took YM 10 months to build up a bond strong enough to begin doing groundwork/backing – backing , you’d already been Broken . They all then discovered how mature you were, and loving and intelligent – quick to learn.
I got you on loan 10 months ago. You were then 5.5 years old and beautiful. We’ve bonded and become more , I think ,, than rider&horse. I think we’re friends .
But 2 and a half years later , you still linger in the distance , popping up when we don’t need it. We went on a hack and a man was throwing a ball for his dog about 80 metres ahead and still, she thought it meant being hit. How reinforced must that lesson have been. And others places too- Pc rallies, circling my arm in trot , she was sure I was going to whip her, and passing gloves or water bottles up. I can tap the saddle with a whip and send her from walk to canter.
But I guess the point of the post was – actually – You.Haven’t .Won.
We are stronger than ever and doing amazingly for the handicapp you've given us. We're a team and although thinking about her having to be with you makes me tear up , she'll never have to go near that again . We'll battle on with the falls and strops ,refusing to be caught and putting on weight we'll do it ....
Bring it :D Xxx

(((hugs))) for getting this far, this ponio means a lot to me and it hurt today seeing her so terrified of a glove being passed up but I know we can make it :)

Well done you, makes you wonder how people can be so cruel. See Kenzos post earlier, the poor pony dragged along behind the "Travellers" van.

Glad your mare has found happiness in you..x

Well done you for making her life so much better. She will get there with you, will just take a while to undo all that fear though I guess some she may never be able to forget. I hope you both go from strength to strength and build your trust together.

This is the first time a thread/post has ever made me cry. Poor little Molly and now lucky Molly, she has you and the wonderful YM. She will always have the memories, but in time they do fade and are, to some extent covered by the memories of the love and kindness she is receiving from you.

I speak from experience, my lad was extremely badly abused, beaten with a shovel, wheelbarrow and whips. Starved and mentally abused. He will never be the horse he could have been, but his memories have faded somewhat and he is happier. He has regained his trust in a few select people and no longer attacks anyone who he feels threatened by. I think that they can be put back together, they will never be the same but they can be happy and lead secure lives.

Well done you, makes you wonder how people can be so cruel. See Kenzos post earlier, the poor pony dragged along behind the "Travellers" van.

I know you are not saying it was all travellers, but everybody please don't believe that all abused horses suffer at the hands of travellers. My lad was abused at a well thought of equestrian competition establishment, he failed to conform to there idea of how he should behave. He is opinionated and has attitude, however he did not deserve what happened to him. I bought him from a dealer (NOT the abuser) and was contacted by an ex-groom from the abuser's yard, asking about him and telling me the whole story.

Please let's never lose sight of the fact that abuse, unfortunately, is not the domain of one type of horse owner but goes on behind many stable door, including ones that we would least expect to find it.

Molly's Mama, remember that she has found someone who loves her and will take care of her welfare. You.
