... MDIRF sent the hat Rosie was wearing when she had her accident to the BHS for the damage to be examined and they have just come back with a report. I haven't seen it yet but I gather one of the things it mentions is that they are 99% certain the horse must have rolled across her head. The hat was a Charles Owen APM (AP McCoy) helmet and although I wouldn't go so far as to say it saved her life (likely that's down to the very prompt attentions of some of the other jockeys who galloped across to help and the 4 medics who appeared almost instantly) but it most certainly did a fantastic job of protecting her head. She now has a new one - same model.

Thank god she was wearing a good helmet. I am sure many people (inclung myself at times) have worn one past its best and been lucky to get away with it.

So glad she is on the mend and that she is clearly feisty enough to fight her way back from this to full fitness!

Thanks for sharing that information. I'm due to get a new crash hat and will certainly look at that model.

Thank you for sharing this information.
It is so reassuring to know that the hat did its job under such extreme circumstances. Excellent that it was tested and results shared.
We really should never take our safety equipment for granted...and not balk at the thought of renewing it when necessary - even if it doesn't look worn.
Hope all is well, and Rosie is still enjoying her riding. It was so nice that she posted on here herself recently.

I think after this post I will be asking the Parents for a new hat. I have dropped mine a couple of times recently and this post has made me realise how vulnerable I am making myself by not replacing it.

Thank you for sharing, and thank god she was wearing such a good hat.

It is a very good model of hat- wish it was easier to get one though felt like had to go to ends of earth to source the APM- imagine they are somewhat easier to find in Newmarket! I figured national hunt jockeys would chose the best in head protection considering the inherent risks of the job hence why I followed their lead despite only doing low level eventing.
Glad it did its job for rosie.

I would also highly recommend the Charles Owen Adventura hat - I landed on my head (as far as we know - I don't remember anything for 3 weeks after the accident) on tarmac from a young horse - and I would not be here if it wasn't for that hat.
Unfortunately the hat got thrown out - I didn't realise you could send them off for examining.

I now get so wound up more than ever when I see people riding out without a hat on - especially as I now know exactly how hat's can save our lives.

Thank goodness she was wearing it!! Its just not something to skimp on IMO.

I felt exactly the same as I love duns about the fact that jockeys would choose the best, it is the solid sides which was the reason i went for it - i witnessed a horrific accident at burgie a good few years ago now when the horse dropped dead and kicked the rider in the side of the head - I can't help thinking this hat could have made a difference on that occasion.

Thank you for sharing and so pleased she is back out and about!!

Oh, Mum told me it was an APM
