To those who don't think it's unlucky to change a horse's name...

LOL - I haven't read all the replies but I loaned a pony for my daughter and his name was "Hampton" :o

We changed his name to Tom and Oh My God he was the most viscious pony I have ever encountered!! They did warn me that he got a bit funny with mares (I have two mares) but I never imagined that he would actually attack anyone who dared entered the field!! The pony was totally dangerous!

Strangely though, when you actually managed to catch him (before you had been nearly killed) and once he was tacked up - he was perfect! ;)

But after kicking the blacksmith, breaking my yard owners thumb and being too terrified to let my daughter (or anyone else) into the field - he had to go back!

i refuse to change my horses name. i dont like it (ist slowly growing on me)...but its bad luck. ive changed 2 horses names now and both have been bad news!!!

mabey he just needs lots of time to settle in before you ride?

I won't ever again - changed my last horses name and been on crutches for over 5 weeks after she dumped me on yard whilst mounting - has made me wonder ..........!!!

My horse was Mr Crystal, positivley angelic in all ways when tried for both times and snapped him up. For the first 2 weeks of our trial he was great so bought him.

Changed his name to Mr Darcy - hello rearer !!

Bah, tis all popy cock!

Mine was called Popeye, and then boxer before his last owner called him Beau. He has never had anything seriously wrong with him and despite being a bit of a twit and immature when I got him has been a horse in a million

New pony wouldn't catch.............we eventually got so fed up, renamed him Devil and low and behold a few days later OH caught him and since then he has been ace!

Hi jojo, sorry for the lack of posting this week, just started a new job and hardly had a spare minute!

Am about to update the diary threads, but in a nutshell, he had a week off after the back lady saw him, then I got on him today to walk him around for 10 minutes. Except we got 2 yards from the mounting block before he started bucking and I came off again. I didn't get back on after that!

I'm sorry to be a bit negative, but I really think you should be appealing to the yard for an exchange or refund. You're going to get yourself hurt. :(

Naughty Jack!

Jen how'd you feel in yourself, you feeling confident about getting back on - or are you dreading it? I ask because I think it may just be make or break time.

I had Murphy (previously Maverick ;) ) for a year or so, he was an angel. I then tried a sharp, beautiful black TB and he dumped me and do you know what, I wouldn't get back on him. No dice, no way. Now I have Ed and he could do anything, but there's a difference in behaviour - and intention of a horse who plays up.

If it starts to take the enjoyment out of horses, please don't dally and send him back and go for a refund. I had 4 years off riding after the wrong horse - life is too short and we're meant to enjoy it! :D

i totally agree with kitty here, think of my confidence issues after just one fall from the wrong horse... it's a hobby that you're meant to enjoy. (((hugs))) i really feel for you xx

Absolutely agree with these others - however much you like this horse, he may well not be right for your first horse as an owner. Only because you need to enjoy this experience and really feel deep down that you look forward to being with your horse and riding him. In these early days you should be building the foundations of a great relationship with every encounter, rather than chipping them away. Sorry to say all this but as everyone says you might need to make a decision sooner rather than later, if you are to get a refund of your pony pot.

I don't mind changing a horse's name. Unfortunately Elizabeth believes it is bad luck, hence we have a horse called Fany and a highly amusing time when the farrier and YO's OH get together:rolleyes:;)

I totally concur with clipcloppop and kitsune. Totally know how you feel, I'm so glad I sent Chance straight back when she dumped me the way she did. Only just off crutches so frustrating and you really don't need to get hurt like that or suffer the despair and frustration of losing your confidence. It does make it hard to remember it's meant to be fun. Good luck with whatever you decide - hugs from me too!

Thanks all. I know the (unanimous!) advice makes sense on paper, but in reality I'm not ready to give up on him yet.

It seems that he hadn't been sat on Friday/Saturday, so when I got on on Sunday, he hadn't been sat on for a week, and last time it hurt. So there may have been an element of fear there (and I'm no lightweight), and possibly a hint of him taking advantage of the situation!

I've got a private lesson on him on Thursday, I will borrow a back protector and buy one at the weekend.

Some of the people at the yard are being very helpful and have been lunging and riding him the last couple of days. Back lady gave him the all clear yesterday, so there's no real reason why I shouldn't have a successful (but quiet) lesson tomorrow.

Glad you're back on your (unaided!) feet. Are you back riding soon? Any luck with your horse hunting?

Have sat back on and all good but haven't been fit enough to look aftr one or really ride properly. Had planned to try and wait until new year so coming out of winter, not into, and save up to put back some of what i've lost this year but just can't make myself do the sensible thing so hunting commences ....... again!!!! I admire your decision to brave it again and with all the right positive thoughts. Hope tomorrow goes smoothly for you and Jack behaves, at least this time you are both better prepared so hopefully all will go well. Look forward to hearing x

Let us know how it goes. Remember though that it's not good for you or him if you are not right for one another. Just a thought - should you be having to buy a back protector to ride your first own horse? X

Well things were going well - had a couple of lunge lessons, then a couple of lessons off the lunge, and finally last Thursday we were cantering circles and I felt fine on him - confidence pretty much restored.

Then on Friday he was kicked in the field, then sent down to Liphook where he's currently on anti-biotics and has a cast on his hock. He'll be there for another couple of weeks.

He's still called Jack...
