This week, in the trailer, my horse got her tie rope caught on the jockey door handle and had a major panick. If I tie her too short, she cant reach the hay net. If I do not tie her up in the trailer ( she loads, travels brilliantly) is there any safety reason (worse than this ) that anyone knows about please?

Definately tie up. Cant you move your haynet closer, or tie her a bit shorter. She should be able to reach.
I know what you mean though, there seems no where to tie up a net in a IW that doesnt seem miles away. Ive seen haynets tied to the tie ring and as long as its a small holed net, this may work for you.

Thanks for replies but if I hang the hay net on the tie ring, the hay net gets stuck on the jockey door handle and opens the door! What are the risks if I didnt tie her up do you think as I cant think of any - some say it is safer as if they fall and are tied up, they can break their neck. Bailing string does not always break, it didnt in this case. Any more thoughts?

Hi, I had a friend who travelled her horse without it being tied up or having a breast bar in. She had an accident (head on) and her horse came through the front panel of the trailer and hit the back of her discovery. Don't even think about travelling without a breast bar even.

Just had a thought (doh, I am blonde !) Quick release trailer ties! Anyone used them, do they work ?

I have adjustable trailer ties permanently attached in my trailer (and barn if I tie up) horse walks in and is clipped on to cross ties. No haynet. No messing. Never had any problems with them. One thing, sounds obvious, but I've seen it done the other way, ALWAYS make sure that the quick release pull clip is at the halter end, otherwise a panicking horse can swing the tie around like a weapon and take his, or your, eye out!

There is always the possibility, when travelling loose, of the horse having his head down if you have to stop a bit hard and damaging his neck. Calculated risk.

always tie up, I've heard of horses travelling untied who've had there heads down whether breaking or not and have got heads and necks under breast bar, panicked and broken their backs or been paralysed - please always tie him or her up

must she have a haynet? could you just take one for her to have at the event but not in the trailer?
