Oh goodness me! We huffed and puffed and spooked and snorted down the track. The track was DIFFERENT. The flood water had run down it so there was stones where there shouldn’t be and no stones when their should be. THEN there was a WHEELBARROW just sat there. If I take a wheelbarrow into the field, well I don’t cod he spends all the time chasing it and playing with it. I can ram him in the knees/ask him to back up in his stable with one. But THIS wheelbarrow was not in the right place! However there were STONES on the other side so what on earth was he going to do. But he is a good boy and keeps going just with extra hyperventilating and dramatic steps from side to side.

Made it (safely) to the bottom field and had a lovely canter down one side and trot back. Then out of field again and into next. Oh my goodness there was another stone in the gateway. Then canters very nicely up the stubble field, trot to change leg and up the other side.

Get back to gate and the tractor is in the gateway with a trailer full of straw bales with an extra 2 bales on the fork of the tractor. Slight hesitation then marches straight passed it with about 1 meter of gap!

It's a crazy world out there. Imagine seeing round bales scattered across a field because straw had recently been baled and wasn't picked up yet. The horror! Those bales were not there last time and they certainly don't belong there! Best to look and snort from a distance.

Then totally forget about them when you get to an apple tree nearby because hey, apples!

My mare can spot a change on one of our routes like a Pro. I can take her past the biggest farm traffic, artics, motorbikes and scramblers but a baled field, a rebuilt wall, a car parked in an unusual spot, even people in an unusual place is met with much mistrust. I read that horses see life in pictures so they spot change very easily - helped rationalise what I see as irrational!!

We saw two walkers on a bench we always go past. Warranted a plant, reverse and snort. She was ok just pointing out they weren’t supposed to be there!
