Ok so I am stupid. I have been called it so many times today. Peter is a 17+hh DWB that was written off as a 6 yo (approx 5 yrs ago) due to flat feet. He has done very little in 5 yrs, just turned out with cows. He was destined for the slaughterhouse in the next week or so. I begged for him. I have got him but have to find the meat money within the week, (£500). i brought him home and instantly he fell in love with my 3yo Harry. Probably the first time in years he was with another horse so they spent the whole day licking eachother and "natting". Oh god, what have i done!

I think I would have done the same thing, couldn't bare the thought of the poor thing going to the slaughterhouse. I really hope you manage to find the money to keep him.

AAWWWW!!

Thats really kind of you. I, too, am a real softy and would have done just the same, it I could.

He one very very lucky horse.

Years ago we rescued a horse from the owners of an abottair (sp) he wasn't going for meat but was living in knee deep grass and very near to lami. We never knew his breeding but he always looked like a cleveland bay cross. He was 5, we broke him and sold him to a local eventer....he went quite far on a local level!

So not all cheap buys are a disaster! Good luck x

He's not off the hook yet, 7 days and £500!!!!!!!!!!1 am £2500 o/d and skint! BUT , its only money!!!!!!!!!!!!!fingers crossed! xx

I think it's horrid that someone would not just give him to you and would rather sell him to the slaughter house for a bit of money. I really really hope it all works out. Let me know how you get on xx

Oh my god, I have Fly on box rest and massive bills due to tendon strain and now this. I know, I will die with nothing! My husband is fantastic, he supports me 100%. I am on my way to 50 years old but I have to show this poor horse some sort of love. He has never been given a tit bit, he was bred as a competition horse and broke down so was scrapped like an old car. I could name famous names but will not for now. Jesus, if only you knew! x

It's so sad how so many horses end up this way. My horse means the world to me and I just can't understand how people can just get rid of them like a scrap car !

Carmaandflin that's a great idea !!!

very best of luck with him, i too cannot understand that "scrap 'em" mentality, it's not his fault he wasn't tough enough for the game.
hope you manage to scrape the cash together, or get a bit of an extension for it. he's one very very lucky horse.

jeeeez i wish i could help... i would of done the same thing as you .. id ask a family member and tell a wee porky lol that a bailiff is coming and you need 5500 smackers lol .. anything id try
good luck xxxx bless that horse

You could always increase you overdraft! I keep doing that and proising myself I will pay it off and not buy another horse...... you can guess the answer to that I am sure.

I would hope that his owners would just be happy for him to go to a good home and give him to you.

He is so lucky. It shocks me that people are willing to just send their ned to meat man.

Good luck, really really hope you find the money. That horse was very lucky you found him. I do really hope it works out for you. ((((Sending Cash generating Vibes)))))))) x

well moneypit....well done you...would have done the same....like you said its only money!! I want one too!! I would love to save a horse from slaughter but never have any idea where you find them really...apart from the obvious place!!...poor thing...bet he is lovely....

I totally agree. I had to give a horse away to someone some years ago (long story) and he went with his wardrobe and all his tack, all for free, as to me it belonged to him, and it fitted him. I was going to take one of his stable rugs, but when I went to say goodbye he was wearing it, and I couldn't take it off his back, so he kept that one too!

I wrote a contract that the person I gave him to (who was the best hope for him at that time) could not sell him for 6 months. I went to see him at the end of that 6 months and she had done wonders for him.

I still miss him sooooooo much.

Good for you, he's a lucky horse.
What are you going to do with him? Is he companion material or do you think one day you'll be able to ride him?
Hope you find the cash! These things have a habit of working out, somehow...

Ask whether you could pay in installments. They can only say no. You actually have him now so from a practical viewpoint its probably better they agree to installments than go to all the hassle of having to come to yours to pick him up then take him away.

Time is a great healer. With good footcare he may come right and become a nice riding horse.

That's exactly how I ended up with my newfie mare Molly(end of my sig) I had to get a bloody credit card to pay for her, put me eternally in debt but I'll never regret it.

Are you planing on keeping him? If not I could give him a home; the problem being i live in Scotland(just East of Edinburgh).I have worked with hunters,p-t-p'rs,event horses up to 3 day level, and on livery/competition yards.I have also competed in showing, dressage, show jumping,x country and endurance. If I can be of any help, pls pm me . I know I don't post much, but I'm an avid reader lol

Thats so kind of you and definately something to bear in mind. My plans are to see what he can do (comfortably) and hopefully keep him but it will depend on money really! Three horses cost so much to keep, especially the big ones! I must try not to get too attached (yeah, right)! Will post updates on forum so keep checking! xx

That's very naughty of them cos horses don't even reach £500 for meat anymore. Offer them £250 as that's more like it.

Moneypit has agreed to pay £500 - she can't now just go back on it and say No I'm only going to give you £250 - how would you feel if that was you?

I hope you do find the money, but from your other post where you say that you can't afford to get his feet trimmed yet do you think it is a good idea to buy him?
