So after lots of reading today my dog had his first raw chicken wing - one for breakfast one for tea. He loved it!!! he is a tiny jrtx, and runs everywhere at 100 miles an hour so is on the skinny side. I leave him with breakfast in the week so want to continue with his normal food then, i dont want him to choke!

I have lots of questions tho!
so is it ok if i do a couple of days a week chicken wings (he weighs 6kg so how many)? Am ok to feed kibble tomorrow morning? and will this help him put on weight? Are there other things I could give him to help him put on weight? If i get a bone from the butchers can he have that on the same day as dried food. Sorry for so many questions!!

They say 12 hours in between raw and kibble is ok.

You can also give raw lamb breast (bone in) thats
a good weight gain food.

Also minced tripe.

I would say 1 wing is enough for a meal, my whippet who is 15kg
would eat 2 for brekkie, but they are fairly big.

Chicken leg meat is good for weight gain-you could chop it off the bone, although TBH, you might find that he copes with little drumsticks. I feed mine kibble with raw tripe and he has been great on this so don't panic too much about the time lapse, although I would make one meal raw, one kibble, if that's what you want to do. You could go raw completely, there's tons of advice in the raw sticky at the top of this page.

Can we see pics? I adore mini-JRT types!

Its advised not to feed weight bearing bones as they are too hard. Wings
have much softer bones.

Raw and kibble don't mix as they travel a different speeds so make sure if you continue with kibble to keep them apart I would not take the chance and if you put a bit of the kibble in a glass of water you will see why.

Basically a correct raw diet will provide every nutrient a dog needs in a much more available form than kibble will so if it were me I wouldn't bother with the kibble, dogs don't need cereal to put on weight. Their weight gain foods are muscle meat and fat.

Chicken is the best staple as it has good sources of the elements dogs need including fat, next comes lamb and pork with beef not so good, So if you feed a variety of Chicken and lamb with a bit of pork with their bones he has everything he needs. Probably for a JRT I would stick to lamb and pork ribs and not leg bones as they can be quite hard.

As an active sort you can feed more if you like, I feed mine by eye and if they get a bit porky then I feed more bones less meat (like wings) if they loose a bit Ill up the quantity or feed more muscle meat, so go up to something like drumsticks or legs. Mine are around 20kg and maintenance for them are 5 supermarket chicken wings fed once a day.

You can help if you feel the bones are a bit on the big side, use a cheap axe and give the bones a good bashing with the sharp end, this is really good for older dogs or small ones that struggle a bit. My sister has a 16yo Husky still enjoying her chicken wings and carcasses, hers are chopped and cut into smaller pieces with scissors after their bashing.

Chicken drumsticks are fine: I think the weight bearing thing is cow bones as they are ridiculously huge and they risk breaking thier teeth. I would have thought drumsticks would be OK.
