I used to put overreach boots on my ponies hind legs cos he is close behind an would brush low, round the coronet, so below where brushing boots would be effective ...
 
Presumably you've never met a horse so close behind that it rubs its coronets hairless then. When you do you might want to consider putting on overreach boots behind, works a treat and easier to source quickly than sausages.
 
I have known people use over reach boots on hinds if the horse is a tad close behind and brushes the coronet band. I have used them myself in this way. So they may have been there for a reason.
He should wear hi-viz when on the roads though.
 
Maybe the horse moves very close behind and he use o/r for that reason rather than a fetlock ring. Done it myself when horse has had a nick on coronary band.

Not so dumb after all!

As hic says, used them myself on hinds. Obvious reason.
 
Clearly Saharas has nothing better to do than try and pull people down without knowing overly much about them or there horse maybe saharas should be in the yard bitch thread......
 
Mine wears OR boots on his hinds, as he moves very close behind...

In which case I apologise if I've offended any of you:) ...BUT to be fair, this horse had rather bad conformation behind& I honestly cannot see how it could have connected behind as his leg action was that of someone who'd had a boxershorts accident. Even coming towards me it looked like the fronts were a mono-leg and the hind legs were literally on each corner & flicked outward as he walked..I honestly can't see how they could connect, but hey ho. *runs before gets assassinated* I wish I'd taken a vid then you would see. I've had many horses and genuinely never had or known any that needed over reach boots behind.

Quite possibly he knew what he was doing or perhaps he was just a numpty or saw someone else doing it and thought it was big and clever

I do feel a bit sorry for this poor sod riding his coloured horse in view of you, OP. I know he wasn't wearing HI Viz (naughty naughty) and you claim he didn't wave to say a Thank You to you, but I can't imagine you were giving off very good vibes to him, going by the comments you've made about him on here today. Eeek, just hope you never follow me on my horse when you're out in your car. You'd have a field-day slating us - although, to my credit I do always ride out in a yellow fluorescent exercise sheet and fluorescent pink tabard! At least you'll know us if you see us hacking around the lanes of Devon and I am the only person around here who seems to think Hi Viz is a good idea. I get laughed at! :D

Not embarrased in the slightest,just trying to avoid world war 3!Apologised above, I freely admit I have never ever had contact with any horse that rubs his rear coronet bands, let alone raw to the point of needing over reach boots.

The first person I mentioned was wearing them simply because he was a gadget freak and had every single boot & gadget on that you could physically get on a horse..and I asked him why, he was under the impression that was where they should be used. The guy today I never spoke to, but he was very arrogant in his whole manner & so got my gears grinding (he'd ridden past a layby by about 2 foot and didn't look to be able to get back to the layby after much kicking, so I reversed absolutely ages till the next one & let him pass..he never acknowledged or thanked me once which is why he came across as a twonk that knew it all & it made me laugh.thats was all.

As I said above I apologized to anyone who uses them for a genuine reason..& I was not mocking them..if we can't learn something new daily, then there is no point! What I can't apologise for is my issues with rider rudeness, which does get my back up as this guy did..as well as many other drivers who are not horsey...this gets the rest of us into dangerous situations. The rider I referred to was not able to/did not want to turn or ask his horse to back up even the couple of feet..judging by the rein flapping that went on,despite the horse stood square & still I really genuinely think it wasn't for protection as much as having gadgets, the same as the other guy admitted years ago.

Nothing against hi vis my lovely and I very rarely slate anyone..we cross posted so I explained more while you were typing..

Thank you Welsh D..I didn't use the word numpty as I was trying to not get jumped on for picking on some one new/novicey which I really wasn't!!:D I was merely observing! And think numpty was a far better way of putting it!:D

OP - boyfriend uses OR boots behind when playing polocrosse as it's such a high risk sport that they protect every part of all four legs. Looked very strange to me the first time I saw it as I'm sure it probably does to everyone until they have experience of it!

I sometimes use over reaches on hinds. Normally only to play Horseball, but one never knows what sensible rationale is behind a random stranger's actions...

Mine gets nicks below where brushing boots would be effective too, so may have to put overreach boots on, in fact I don't think she overreaches or brushes on the fores, so it would all be on the hinds, I'm sure someone will think it looks silly and maybe I will have to buy them for the fores to save face :-)

Maybe the guy was just a bit flustered OP, or maybe he thanked you when you were looking round to reverse and you missed it. Who knows!

But OP, you started your original opening post by commenting that the said male rider of the coloured horse in question WASN'T wearing any Hi Viz. I was just saying, you couldn't fault ME for that if you came across us out hacking! And yes, you were slating this rider in your OP. You were taking the P out of him on here because he was using OR boots on his horse's hinds.
