There's always a smart arse isnt there!

Jesus Christ, does it really matter what type of dog it is?! This forum is getting out of control for debates, honestly!

Main thing is Rosie and ned escaped unharmed, hope you are not too shaken Rosie, he sounds like a genuine youngster to be so sensible

If he knows them I'd ask him to have a quiet word first, most farmers I know would be peeved enough to hear their dog had reacted like this to a horse / livestock.

What does it matter if it is a staff or not? Its got four legs, lots of sharp teeth, does it matter, either way it stil bit Rosie.

Hope there no lasting damage!

I think the important point is that it could have been a child on a much shorter pony. In which case the dog could have grabbed the childs leg and pulled them off the pony - potential for even more biting.

I'd report this dog immediately to the Police - no messing

and make sure you have photos of the injuries to both yourself and your horse for evidence

Oh for goodness sake ! I wasn't trying to imply that all Staffies are evil, I dont for one minute think they are. I think they are quite sweet, actually. Saying "staffy x type dog" simply provides a generic identifier for the dog, exlcuding lurcher types, JRT types, and hounds !

The main problem is, whatever sort of dog it was, it bit Rosiie, and she needs to be able to describe it in some way in order to find its owners, and even the police if it ever happens again. The actual breed is quite irrelevant.

I'd ask the horse's owner to have a word in the first instance. If they are not prepared to do anything I would phone. There's no way I'd go back to a place with a vicious dog, especially on foot.

Oh here we go again!!! yawn
I got bitten by a German Shepherd when i was a kid, but i don't slag them off as a breed
Rosie knows her dogs, and i'm sure she knows what this dog was today. She didn't say anything about all staffies being evil.

Hope you are both ok Rosie
Would go round and see owner and give him a peice of my mind if i were you. Could have been a serious accident

God this site is getting silly at times

Doesnt matter what the dog was,it attacked someone for no reason.
Sure if had loked like a GSD/collie/yorkie OP would have said "bla type" and wasnt just having a pop at staffs,in fact if I remember rightly a close family member of OP keeps staffs so why would she??

Glad you and horse are both fine, I would have a chat with the farmer then report if no action is taken by him.

yeah - go round and see the owner and risk getting attacked by the same dog ??? or by the owner !!

(but I'm a pessimist)

Glad you and horse are both ok. My daughter's 14.1Hh pony got bitten on the rump by a border collie. The dog leapt over the fence and chased him. It tore the flesh too. IT WAS NOT A STAFFY TYPE DOG

Personally, I would report it to the police after all it was loose and clearly not under control on a public high way.

I understood about not wanting to shake the boat.

I think the reason a lot of people get defensive when people so much as mutter the word 'staffy type' is because we're all worried about the breed getting persecuted, not by the OP but by people in general. Hope this helps keep the peace!!

Rosie, I hope that your ok hun? What has the guy said who owns the horse? Has he rung you yet? I think that I would leave it until first thing in the morning and speak to him then if he hasn't rung you before. I'd be telling him that I was going to report the dog as god forbid if that was a little un on a pony

I hate to think what could of happened

Oh dear Rosiie. I am glad to hear that you and horsey are relatively ok following your ordeal.

I had a nasty run in with a couple of boxer dogs once

and had to report them to the police (as it turned out so had a few other people that day, who had also been attacked

). The creatures ended up being destroyed, and quite right too. Further up the bridleway I turned back two teenage girls and a lab puppy - I hate to think what would have happened if I'd not turned them back...

Thankfully Star was very brave and bold about the whole thing. I would not like to have gone through that experience on any other horse, let alone a youngster like you did

If I were you I would report this to the police. The dog's owner is clearly not acting responsibly in having it running loose in the first place. Responsibility of a dog like that is not to be taken lightly, and I would leave it to the police to decide if they deserves another chance.

PS, I can't believe that some people are getting worked up about the wording of your post! WFT?!
