If you look at piccies or videos of travellers riding horses bareback (eg at Appleby Fair), the feet-forward beyond shoulders position is normal for that style of bareback riding.
But that doesn't make it right though. Nothing like being upright and nicely in balance, and not using your horse's mouth to keep you in place! Dreadful position
