...the idiot riding on the A338 (a busy commuter route) at 7.15am wearing a dark coat and no hi viz.

I sincerely hope that she and her horse got home safely and that she never again thinks its appropriate to set off riding on the road in the half light barely visible to other road users.

Oh dear :/ I think it's an owners responsibility to keep their horse safe with hi-vis. They can do whatever to themselves, it's their choice. But they have a duty of care for their horse

I said something to two women out riding the other day. As I went past I opened my window, smiled and politley told them I would have seen them a lot sooner had they been wearing high viz

Doubt it made a difference but made me feel better

Driving home last night at 8:45pm and encountered two separate cyclists all in black on the roads. No lights or helmet either, naturally. Bonkers, whatever the mode.

I don't object so much if they get splattered (apart from for the poor driver who never had a chance of spotting them) but I do object if their stupidity gets their horses splattered.

Hi viz should be a requirement for insurance to pay out for any accident on the road. You can pick up a workman's vest for £1 so there's no excuse.

Although we have plenty of horses in my area, it's rare to actually see riders. So I don't have any horsey stories to share, however I did see a cyclist in the dark with no helmet or hi-viz, only dark clothing.

Also, I saw a black cat on the road, quite far ahead of me. It was wearing a reflective collar, I wouldn't have seen it otherwise and might have hit it (although it was far ahead of me, I still had to stop! It was in no hurry to get across the road)

it's unusual to see riders around here wearing hi viz. The few that do tend to be middle aged ladies riding bombproof cobs who don't give a monkey's about impressing passersby.
Personally, I think the riders on beautiful dark bays wearing smart jackets in muted country colours look daft.


Motorcyclists, cyclists and runners seem to realise the need to be seen on the roads but horseriders are sadly behind the times.
