Did anyone see the shocking but fabulous poster in H&H that they're using around the New Forest? One with a photo of a horse gone through a windscreen? I showed it to my non horsey OH and his first response was " S***, no-one would survive that".

Yesterday, on a sedate walk with my three year old child and her pony we encountered many many polite and considerate drivers. Most took the opportunity to have a good look and mouth "ahhh!" at child and thelwell pony (and her hi Viz which reads "learner rider").

But we also encountered two drivers who refused to slow down. I ALWAYS turn, and try to meet the eye of the driver approaching from behind, which 9 times out of 10 will encourage them to slow... but sadly neither of these drivers did and one of them was a postman who hurtled past doing about 60mph on a single track lane.


No-one could say they couldnt see us. My father was working in a field approx half a mile away, and commented today that he saw us trotting along (he saw daughter's hat cover and tabard) . I didnt even see HIM and so it drove home how brilliant Hi Viz is...

Back to the point. More cars on the road means more accidents. I heard a radio advert about road safety and horses last week and it was fab (radio leicester). WHY oh WHY are there no TV adverts? To say it's about funding is RUBBISH. There are grants given within the equestrian world for education, and surely funding a TV advert classes as education? Isnt it high time we, as riders, started asking why there is such a lack of education and campaigns?
 
Agree, there should be adverts about it. However, there are horse riders that need educating in road use also, wearing hi viz etc. Far too many times we see riders (or don't see them) in dark colours and no hi viz gear.
There did used to be adverts, slow down for horses, but they were only shown for a short while. Guess it costs too much to keep them going..
 
Maybe it's time the DSA introduced a new bit in the highway code that states all horseriders must wear Hi Viz?
 
i think we need those adverts that are shocking - like the drinking and driving/on the phone when driving/drinking and climbing a scaffolding ones. They are the one that everyone remembers.

but like Weezy said they will be on at 3am when no one watches them

Absolutely, couldn't agree more. I make sure my grandkids wear their hi viz whilst riding, but don't always wear mine. Must make amends and wear it everytime. As a driver I should know better.

Just as a point of interest I bought, just last week, some more Hi Viz vests for my grandkids, from Tesco's - just a pound each - no excuse at that price. I believe Asda do adult sizes for the same price too.
 
yes, I saw those.

A shop called "its a gift" sells Hi viz kits (for walkers) for about £2, and atm have the tesco Hi Viz vests for 89p each. Poundland do them, bike shops do them, no-one has an excuse.
 
I couldn't agree more always wear my Hi-Viz when I'm out. Where I keep my horse and we ride out are thank god all very quiet roads but if the occasional car comes it always helps to be seen!
 
Try riding in Spain the stupid motorbikes whizz in and out of the horses -nerve wracking to say the least ,however most lorry drivers are good .Ialways make sure my 2 girls wear hi viz .Safe riding everyone
 
I'm curious, how many of you think it should be made law that horse riders/drivers, motorcyclists, pedal cyclists must wear hi-viz?
There was a petition calling for this on the No 10 website last year, but it only got 9 signatures.
 
just today i was riding out, round a sharp bend about to turn into a bridle way, a car came speeding up behind me and breeze, i didnt think it was going to stop!! i was mega spooked by it, he must have been doing 60 at least. Luckily i managed to turn Breeze to allow the car to have more space. What if it was a child? running out he would killed them, he nearly hit breezes back legs... i was fuming. Breeze was really good tho and didnt manic...
 
TV ads at prime time are incredibly expensive, think about how big the companies are that advertise in the prime spots, and how obscure those that advertise (along with the horse ones) at 3am.

IMHO better to advertise in press, on posters in relevant areas, even on the signs on motorways, still reaches broad relevant audience, and achievable in expense.

To be honest I'm suprised there's not more activity like that. How much does a poster cost to produce for goodness sake???

Me and a couple of friends were going to woburn woods on sunday and were on a road once the bridle way run out we were single file and thanked EVERY driver apart from the one that told us to "get off the ******* ROAD" I shouted back at him to read a highway code book! why do some people think we just go on the road to annoy them and that we have no right to be there? I agree money needs to be spent on educating drivers about horses and safety!
On another point though i have also been the driver i have slowed down gave room and passed riders and they have not even aknowledged (sp) that i was there

now this makes me angry and makes me understand a little more why some drivers get angry as they are not always appreciated by riders when they do pass safely

Well I do for one
 
Yes so do I, we have drafted a 'code of conduct' for group rides for our RC and have had to put in that all members of the ride must wear Hi-Viz, after one ride where two or three people turned up without it.
