Hi, Im really concerned about my 5 year old gelding welsh sec cs movement he was proffesionally backed at the end of 2009 and I then loaned him out to a "showing" home supposedly to do some shows last season under saddle this didnt happen at all, he went to no shows anyway his 12 months was up last week so I brought him home due to them not showing him and am i glad i did ! his feet were over long and it was very obvious that when stood up his feet are pointing inwards, more the left than the right, also when ridden he was crossing his front legs and basically moving like hes drunk, now I know he probably wasnt perfect before he went but he was much straighter and he had good knee action now he seems to flick his feet out instead .My farrier trimmed his feet on wednesday and he said he hadnt been trimmed for a while and he was toe in from his fetlock Im at a loss as to why the loanees didnt spot this and mention it, he was ridden today and even after trimming hes still bad, he is very green isnt working from his back end crosses his legs to turn although his front end he holds in an outline Im wondering wether any of this can be down to his balance or lack of it and not being schooled correctly? or is it all down to conformation? also I really want to get him going correctly is there any boots he can wear that would help and or any remedial shoeing that can be done? Im really gutted as hes a super stamp of a sec c, his sire and half sister are hoys ponies and I was hoping to aim him at being a good workers pony .Is there a difference between toe in and pigeon toed ? or are they both the same? and what are the long term effects if his movement cant be corrected? on both his soundness and what he will be able to acheive

All advise welcome and sorry for such a long post

I would say that if you are worried then see if your vet can recommend a remedial farrier who can consult on whether trims or shoes will help. My 3yr old was not trimmed from a foal so had fairly bad pigeon toes (toes turn out) but inwards knees. The normal farrier i had him with helped but it wasnt until he went to the remedial farrier (who was doing another one of mine and had a look for me) that i saw a drastic different. I now feel that if i had put him there first he may be straighter. X rays are brill if you can afford them, if not then deff try a remdial farrier, it may be more foot balance making him clumsy
