My pup is being a total star, and really getting the toilet training thing, he sleeps in a cage for the first 4 nights he slept right though, then he woke up crying about 4am so I let him out for pee. and some nights he sleeps right through others he wakes up once, I just put him out then put him straight back to bed (he crys a little but goes back to sleep quickly). Now some people say I should ignore him and let him cry, but its not like he uses it as a excuse he genuinely needs the toilet. Then someone else said I should take his water away at about 7 and take his bowl out of his cage, but I thought dogs should always have access to water.

Thankyou all for your help so far!!!

i would do what you are doing.
my boy is nearly 1 and he asks to go for a wee at 4 am some mornings,he would not ask if he did not need to go so i dont mind.

thankyou he is only 13 weeks old so I can let him off. I live in a town house and he has started to take himself downstairs to go outside but if I havent twigged he goes on the matt so Ive now put a puppy pad there. I think thats pretty clever bless him!!!

I used to take Harleys water away about 8pm I think... may have been 7pm.....

But when he used to wake up in the night I used to put him out, then put him straight back into the crate. No talking, no cuddles.

Rocky's always been crated without water (from about 8pm ish). He has always slept through the night without needing to wee, and when let out in the morning he neither rushes to have a drink nor to have a wee. I do think we have been very lucky though :D

Main reason for crating without water was not to do with weeing, it was because he is a clumsy oaf and likes to dribble water everywhere so his bed would be soaked through!

I'm doing exactly what you're doing OP. Some nights she cries, others not. But if she does cry, I always get up to let her out and she always does the toilet. I can't go the whole night without needing to get up and pee so I wouldn't expect my 11wk old pup to. I do take her water out at bedtime (11pm), just cos she'd probably knock it over during the night :)

My boy has never had water in his crate, mainly to do with knocking it over but partly to stop excessive weeing. He has slept through the night since he was 9-10 weeks old (but that is only because he was in an outdoor kennel-he's now inside) and he is now 16 weeks. I thought I would have real problems toilet training as we live in 3 houses: 1 flat up 2 flights of outdoor stairs with no garden, 1 farmhouse next to a main road with no enclosed garden, and 1 house with semi-enclosed (huge) garden. I thought with moving around during the week I would have real problems but bless him he has cottoned on and can now hold on and now knows that he should go when he sees grass and not wait. Admitedly he is fairly desperate in the morning but that may be due to having to sleep for 10 hours.

My dog slept in a cage for the first to years as does yours and he would cry when he needed a wee, I like providing you are happy to get up and let him pee I wouldn't change the routine, how ever if he does start to cry for attention you may need to change things but are springer was the same he would cry for a wee so I would let him out pop him back and all was well, he would cry for like 5 mins after being but back but soon settled, thing is he is young so he doesn't have great control over his body functions ie needing to pee just yet, when he gets older he will go all night with out a problem as he has done some nights now personally wouldn't worry :)
