I have two five month old JR puppies, one female and one male. The female (Lily) has got the hang of going to the tliet out side and only occasionally wees indoors but has not pooed indoors for about two weeks. The male (Jake) still poos and wees indoors (sometimes) but does it on the news paper. They are taken outside first thing in the morning, mid morning, lunchtime, mid afternoon and before bed time. They both go overnight wihtout any accidents and have done for quite a while. They sleep in a crate and come to work with me every day. I take them for a proper walk at lunchtimes.

Does Jake just need more time to get the hang of it?? Are their any tips for toilet training??

TBH you have done incredibly well - it is notoriously difficult to house train two puppies at the same time, and JRTs are particularly stubborn. Make sure when he does go in the right place that you behave like someone who has just won the pools, and when he goes in the wrong place just give him a look that conveys your disappointment in him. He will get there, he's still very young.
 
Thanks Sooty! I have not had my own dog before and people said I was mad when I told them I had TWO JR!! They are very good and I think perhaps I am expecting too much too soon! I will keep at it!
 
my just 4 month old boy JR is almost 100% trained... He hasn't peed or pooed for weeks (probably 2/3 weeks) but do have odd accident when he's so excited... I am very pleased with him. he now asks to go out. Dry overnight in Crate.

Like you he's my first own dog.

TBH you are doing really well as sooty says it's harder with 2 also they are still young... Mine wouldn't go on the newspaper at all so i had to be on alert all the time to catch him at it!!!!! Generally it should take about 6 months(i think) to fully train them. Some breeds are harder than others.
 
yep small breeds generally take longer than the bigger ones - sounds as if you are doing all the right things just remember to be consistant and take him out after he wakes up, after meals,if you see him circling etc and stay with him until he performs so that you can praise. A little tip ...never use ammonia based disinfectant to clear up any 'accidents' - this will just encourage the dogs to go in the same place again - you can buy some spray to clean up with that effectively neutralises any odours ( if they can smell where they have peed or pooed they will want to go in the same place - and to a dog, disinfectant smells like wee !).


Also just be aware that dogs can be sexually mature from around 5 months - please make sure that they are neutered or kept away from each other at the slightest sign of the bitches season

YOU NEED TO REWARD HIM WITH A TREAT/PRAISE EVERYTIME HE PASSES A MOTION IN THE GARDEN, AND REMOVE HIM IMMEDIATLEY FROM THE HOUSE TO THE GARDEN AS HE IS IN THE ACT!!!
ALSO EVERY TIME U LEAVE THEM IN THEIR CRATE EVEN IF U POP OUT FOR 10 MINS LET THEM STRAIGHT OUT INTO THE GARDEN, CARRY THEM OUT IF NEED BE SO THEY DONT HAVE A CHANCE TO DO THE DIRTY DEED ON THE WAY OUT!!!
also as the last reply advises !!!NEUTER THEM BOTH ASAP, THE BITCH CAN BE DONE B4 FIRST SEASON AND THE DOG AT AROUND A YEAR WHEN TESTICLES ARE BIG ENOUGHT TO DO.

I have already spoken to the vets about neutering them both and they will be done ASAP. (Havng my WB colt done at the end of the month so he can tell poor Jake all about it!!!)
