My mare injured herself out hunting on the 19th December.. She went lame going through some deep mud so I jumped off. She's not a good traveller, so we didn't bother trailering her the 2 miles home, but I lead her on her own at her own speed on the grass verge home.
She was very stiff and sore, so we gave her bute and kept her quiet, thinking she would hopefully just loosen up. YO reckoned she had tied up, but he muscles aren't hard, and she is only stiff/sore over her back. After two days with no improvement, we had the vet out. She said my mare didn't look like she had tied up, but took the tests anyway. We trotted and turned her, and our vet was very puzzled as to what was wrong with her. My mare is also standing with her back feet about 50cm behind where she usually puts them.
We got a call later that day to say that her muscle enzymes were raised, but not greatly, so to keep her still and call her out in a week or so. That was the 22nd December..
New Years Eve, our vet came out and took more blood tests, and commented that she seemed slightly better, and that we should have the physio out to see her, to try and fix it if it is a muscular problem. The enzyme levels were fine, but the other test they do, showed that my mare was having muscle spasms...
The physio came out on the second and loosened up her muscles and gave us stretches to do with her a couple of times a day. We were doing these stretches and she seemed alot better turning, but still as awkward moving. She then began to not let us do some of her stretches on Sunday, so we just gently persisted. But on Monday and Tuesday she was really hating it, so we called the vet who came out yesterday. She couldn't see much improvement, and is very puzzled..
So we're having the osteopath who has seen her before out tonight, to see whether he can figure out what is wrong. So, if he can't, the vet wants my mare to go to Newmarket for tests and scans.
Cookies if you've got this far.. Vibes for Tolly, my lovely but very sore mare please?
And have any of you had any similar experiences?
